Lady Cougar tennis opens 2013 season with exciting win over Bethany

In an exciting dual of momentum swings as the Lady Cougars led 4-0 over the Lady Swedes then dropped three straight singles matches to draw Bethany to within one. Barton earned a split in the last two singles matches to win the match 5-4.

"While it's a great start to the season with a win, we certainly realize that we have a few issues to address," said Head Coach Lyle Stickney. "Several of our ladies delivered perfunctory singles performances that displayed little of the effort for which they are known. That being said, we did win the meet after all and all of the team members contributed to that so I can't be overly critical, a lot of very good things also occurred on the court today."

Barton was strong in the doubles winning all three matches by a combined 24-11 score. Freshman Karina Ono and sophomore Michelle Miller won the No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2. The freshman duo of Darrien Beckwith and Aspen McCann were almost as impressive in their 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Jaime Christiansen and freshman Gentry McLeland teamed up to capture the No. 3 doubles at 8-5.

After Ono won the No. 1 singles by a resounding 8-0 score, Bethany won the next three singles matches over Miller, Beckwith, and McCann. With the Nos. 5 and 6 matches deciding the dual score, Christiansen clinched the win with an 8-3 victory.

"The momentum swing after sweeping the doubles and getting the No. 1 singles win, then dropping the next three singles matches was crazy," said Head Coach Lyle Stickney. "Jaime (Christiansen) came up big for us again as her match won us the meet."
