Barton women’s soccer pulls out late 2-1 victory

"I'm excited we played well against a really good team," said Barton Head Coach Aaron Avila. "We possessed the ball well which is something we haven't done real well against teams of this caliber."

The Cougars were first to strike twelve minutes into the game as Courtney Galliher found the net from a Bianca Barron pass off a corner kick play.  MCC would tie the game twelve minutes later on a Taylor Blakely twenty-seven yard free kick that just cleared over Barton goalkeeper Cecilee Horlacher's reach.

"Overall I was pleased with our performance including our defensive effort," Avila said. "We created chances, missed a few opportunities, but gave ourselves chances.  Defensively we limited them to only three shots on goal with the lone goal coming off a free kick.  That's two free kicks in the last two days that could have easily turned into shutout victories."

Remaining tied for the next sixty-five minutes, each team had solid chances to score.  It wasn't until just under two minutes to play that Barron received a pass just outside the penalty box from Ruth Cazier, split two defenders, and blasted a shot to the near post past the diving Monarch goalkeeper for the game winning goal.

"Last time we played back to back games we didn't fare so well," said Avila.  "This time we played tough and stepped it up to pull it out in the end.  This is a good win build upon especially considering the loss we took from them last year.  The girls are improving which we'll need with big conference games coming up next week on the road."
