Chavez 4-2 day carries Barton Wrestling in season opener at the Dan Harris Open #GoBarton

The Barton Community College wrestling team opened the 2022-23 campaign Sunday at the Dan Harris Open held in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Competing against a loaded field consisting of NCAA Division II, NAIA and other NJCAA programs, the Cougars would conclude the day with a 6-12 record battling in six of the possible 10 weight classes.

NJCAA National Qualifier from a season ago, Dawson Chavez would pace the Barton six pack with a 4-2 record before bowing out in the consolation quarterfinals. Chavez would open his season with a second period fall over Nolan Saale of Central Missouri following an opening round bye. Dropping his second bout in a 14-6 major decision to Central Oklahoma's Gabe Johnson, the sophomore recovered stringing three straight victories on the backside with a fall, tech fall and decision until his day ended in a 6-0 major decision to unattached Cason Lindsey.

Cohen Suchy and Keondre Bonner were the other lone Cougars to post victories. Suchy 141-weight class responded back from an opening round loss with a first period fall over Henry Gaertner of Concordia of Nebraska while Keondre Bonner's lone victory scooped his victory in an opening round fall over Austin Ourada of Labette Community College.

Barton will continue its' second of a three weekend stretch Saturday at the Grand View Open held in Des Moines, Iowa.
