Cougars capture three titles at Region VI Championships

The Barton Community College men's track and field team captured three region championships this past weekend at the 2013 NJCAA Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Barton's Track/Soccer Complex.   With fifteen community colleges and over 500 men's and women's athletes, the Cougar men's team finished third in the region and second in the Jayhawk West standings while the Lady Cougars finished fourteenth in region and seventh in the conference.   National qualifiers for Barton will spend the upcoming weeks preparing for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships set to run May 16-18, 2013, at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Brien Berry led the Cougars with a first place finish in the 200m clocking in at 20.73 to narrowly defeat teammate David Winters' 20.96.  Rahim Conwell became the third Cougar to place in the event finishing sixth in 22.10.  In the 100m Berry again edged out Winters as his 10.19 captured third place just .07 seconds ahead of Winters' 10.26.

Tayron Reyes won Barton's second individual title winning the 800m in 1:57.29 while teammate David Berry finished in fifth at 1:58.89.

In the relays, the Berry-Winters duo teamed up with Conwell and Christian Black to win Barton's third regional tile running a 44.43 to win the 4X100m relay championship.  Berry, Winters, Jamaal Henson, and Reyes joined forces to finish third in the 4X400m relay with a time of 3:22.00.

Keirston Lightbourne led the Barton hurdlers with a second place 14.72 in the 110m Hurdles while Rharsard Wright finished sixth in a time of 15.24.  Lightbourne was also solid in the 400m Hurdles placing third with a time of 55.64.

In the jump events Lightbourne again led the Cougars with a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 7.11m.   Tony Green also scored points for Barton with a 13.75m leap in the triple jump to finish in fifth place.   Brandon Stone's 1.93m height in the high jump tied for fifth but fell to sixth on the tiebreaker.  

David Simmons was the lone Cougar to score points in the throws placing sixth in the hammer throw with a 45.18.
