Cougars clinch share of first KJCCC title since 2008
The 8th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team dominated play Sunday for an 8-1 victory knocking off 4th ranked Pratt Community College.
The victory improves Barton to 2-0 in conference play in securing at least a share of the KJCCC title heading into its final league match on Tuesday with a 1:00 p.m. first serve at 2nd ranked Cowley College. Pratt, who knocked off the Tigers last Thursday, falls to 1-2 in league.
In front of a large crowd, consisting of fellow student-athletes and program support from Stueder Contractors and friends, the Cougars swept the doubles' play at Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts before taking five of the six singles' matchups.
The Cougars' No. 2 doubles tandem of Shane Tapera and Victor Alves won their match decisively 8-1 over Kenneth Rabinad Vila and Kenta Kawada as the No. 3 duo of Oliver Naude and Mohhamed Abuzed doubled up the Beavers' 8-1. The closest match came in the top slot with Gabriel Garay and Hayden Loffler coming out on top of an 8-6 battle with Alexi Khamrotau and Daniil Blinov.
Garay and Alves took the top two singles' matchups of ranked players in straight set fashion, 14th ranked Garay winning in quick 6-3 and 6-2 fashion over 26th ranked Khamrotau while 18th ranked Alves won 6-4 and 6-2 over No. 22 Blinov.
In the No. 3 slot, Abuzed prevailed 10-7 in the tiebreak after splitting 7-6 sets with Vila while Tapera also needed extra play in the No. 4 singles action winning the first 6-2 but dropping the second 6-3 before coming out victorious 7-4 in the tiebreaker over Kawada.
Barton's lone loss came in the No. 5 position as Armando Sigauque won the first set 6-4 but the Beavers' Tshivhase rallied to win the second 6-3 before coming out on top 10-6 in the tiebreak.
Loffler closed out the day's action in the No. 6 spot by chalking up the Cougars' third straight-set sweep winning 6-2 and 6-3 over Sixto Golobart.
