Barton women's swimming claims third place for third straight year, men finish sixth at the NJCAA Championships
For a third consecutive season, the Barton Community College swimming programs once again carried hardware back to the hill following the 2025 NJCAA National Swimming & Diving Championships held this past Wednesday-Saturday at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.
On the men's side, the Cougars matched their counterparts with 17 new personal best times to go with seven new program Top 10 impacts, as Barton finished sixth in the team standings with 261.5 points, 31.5 points behind Monroe College for fifth place.
Indian River Community College outpaced the 14-team field with 1,362 points to claim their 51st straight championship with Southwestern Oregon Community College falling runner-up with 846 points over the 25 events while Iowa Central Community College concluded the top three with 463.
Arnaldo Guimaraes contributed a team high 40 points, as the freshman landed inside the top eight in three of his four events. Guimaraes posted Barton's highest individual result coming in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching the wall fourth quick with a 55.84 stoppage. Guimaraes also added a fifth-place result in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:03.32), eighth place finish in the 200-IM (1:57.52), and ninth fastest 200-yard freestyle (1:43.95) for the fifth quickest time in program history.
Cameron Sein delivered Barton's other lone top eight individual placing with a sixth best wall touch of 23.82 in the always exciting 50-yard butterfly.
Falling just outside of top 8 finishes, Mateo Wallet delivered a pair of ninth place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle, while fabricating the other individual program impact in the 100-yard backstroke finishing 10th with the program's seventh best time 53.25.
In team events, the Cougars highest placings came with bronze medals in the 200-freestyle and 200-medley behind the four pack of Wallet, Joao Ribeiro, Sein and Guimaraes with an additional fourth place result coming in the 400-yard medley.
Sitting in fourth place at the meets midway point, the Lady Cougars dialed it in when it mattered most climbing into third place at the conclusion of day three before securing its' third straight third-place trophy behind Saturday's strong final day to edge out fourth place Jamestown Community College by seven points.
Earning the team title for the 43rd consecutive season was Indian River as the Pioneers bested the 13-team field with a four-day 1,436 total while Southwestern Oregon captured its fourth straight runner-up finish with 736 points while the Cougars followed with 354.
Overall, for the week, Barton rewrote 17 new personal best times with nine marks landing inside the program's Top 10 record books.
Leading the women's team high point honors with 56 points was Marcela Contes Tribst, as the freshman delivered the highest individual performances with a pair of fourth placings to go along with three of the Cougars nine program impacts. Contes Tribst distributed the biggest impact in the 50-yard backstroke clocking the program's third fastest time 28.73 for the first of her two fourth place finishes. Placing inside the top seven in all four individual events, Contes Tribst added her second fourth placing in the 100-yard IM with a wall touch of 1:02.96 for the fourth quickest program stoppage.
Long distance specialist Aleksandra Cicha turned in 53 points, as the sophomore finished inside the Top 6 in all four of her individual events. Cicha's highest result came in the 200-yard butterfly with a fifth quickest wall tap 2:22.34 to edge out teammate Elena Lara's sixth place 2:29.23. Closing her two-year Barton career, Cicha added a trio of sixth place results in the 500-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle.
Making her nationals debut, Katy Alvarez turned in an all-around week finishing with a trio of individual Top 10 placings. The freshman delivered the first of her two sixth placings with a seventh program quickest 1:15.86 100-yard breaststroke. The breaststroke specialist added a sixth place 200-yard breaststroke before posting the program's sixth best 50-yard breaststroke stoppage 33.70 for a seventh place.
In the five relay events, the Cougars secured a trio of third place finishes in the 200-medley behind Contes Tribst, Alvarez, Lara, and Paige Mink, 400-medley by Contes Tribs, Alvarez, Cicha, Makayla Baxter and the 800-freestyle performed by Cicha, Lara, Baxter and Contes Tribst.
