Cougars begin 2014 with double overtime road win over DII No. 19 Brown Mackie; Gibson enters the Cougar record book

In a seesaw game featuring twenty-two lead changes, the Barton Community College men's basketball team began the spring semester of the schedule with a 108-103 double overtime victory Saturday afternoon at NJCAA Division II No. 19 ranked Brown Mackie College.  The Cougars outscored the Lions 10-5 in the second additional frame of action to pick up the first win of 2014 and improve to 12-4 overall while dropping Brown Mackie to 9-5.  Barton will begin Jayhawk Conference play at home on Saturday January 11 as the Cougars host Pratt Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym.

Sophomore transfer Darius Gibson put up a career best forty-two points to tie five other former Cougars for the fourth best single game effort in Barton history.  Gibson knocked down 13-of-17 shots from the field, including numerous and-1 conversions, and connected on 16-of-20 from the free throw line.  The sixteen made free throws also tied Gibson with Ebi Ere's 2001 performance for fourth best in a single game performance.   Tyler Corley scored twenty-points in part to a 9-of-11 effort from the charity stripe while Isaac Williams and Darryln Johnson scored fourteen and twelve respectively.  Deriece Parks came off the bench to lead the Cougars with thirteen rebounds while Gibson led in assists with six.

Jason Jordan led five Brown Mackie players in double-digits with thirty points including a perfect 8-of-8 from the line and 6-of-10 from behind the arc.  Rico Spikes scored eighteen with Dionte Forney contributed fifteen as both players led in rebounding with eight each.  Coming off the bench Ahasuerus McDonald and Curtis Moore scored eleven and ten points respectively.

Both teams were solid from the free throw combining for 79% on 68-of-86.  Barton knocked down 80% connecting on 36-of-45 while the Lions shot 78% on 32-of-41.
