Hometown product Brent Biggs is in his eighth season leading the Barton Baseball program. Returning to where his collegiate career began, Biggs spent six years as assistant coach under former skipper Mike Warren before taking over the program in 2014. 

Biggs’ squad grinded to another solid campaign in 2021 as Barton posted a 34-18 record overall including a second best KJCCC West mark of 20-12. Sitting in the middle of the pack throughout the midway point of the season, Biggs and the Cougars’ capped the season as one of the hottest teams winning 10 of their final 12 contests before bowing out in the Cowley sub-regional as the Cougars fell short twice to Coffeyville.

Starting pitcher Zach Brummer led five Cougars with post-season honors garnering first team All-Conference and first team All-Region VI. Outfielders Alex Rodgers and Connor Scott added second team All-Conference with an additional pair of freshman earning all-conference honorable mention honors in Zach Tornton and Payton Tinkler.

For Biggs’ and the Cougars the 2020 campaign was looking very promising as the 18th nationally ranked Cougars were off to a 19-3 start and atop the KJCCC West standings at 5-1 before the regular season and post season were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Posting a 5-2 mark just two weekends into the season, Barton strung together a remarkable streak winning 13 straight games including a four game sweep over Western Nebraska before dominating a conference-opening sweep over Hutchinson. Biggs snatched his 200th collegiate coaching career win in Barton’s 12-1 run-rule victory at Colby in what would be the final game of the shortened 2020 season.

Despite the challenges of resorting to online learning to finish up the spring semester, the Cougars remained solid academically with sixteen members earning NJCAA academic honors of achieving a 3.60 GPA overall, six maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, helping lead the team to a nation’s 22^nd best 3.35 GPA.

In 2019 the Cougars gave it a run to qualify for its second straight national tournament berth but came up short in the final four of the Central District to conclude the season at 37-22.  Placing fifth in the Jayhawk West at 17-15, Biggs’ Cougars went on the road for first round post-season action to knock off the East’s third seeded Kansas City before continuing the run in Wichita going 2-2 which included defeats over the West champion Butler Grizzlies and ending No. 13 ranked Johnson County’s season.

Five Cougars earned post-season honors with sophomore pitcher Zach Curry and freshman outfielder Noah Geekie named first team All-Conference and second team All-Region VI. An additional pair of freshmen earned All-West honorable mention honors in Joe Richter and Andrew Stewart while Easton Smith concluded his Barton career with a complete game victory to help Barton reach the final four of the Central District Tournament to land on the All-Tournament Team.

In Biggs’ fourth year at the helm was historic in both program and individual achievements.   Following winning their first Jayhawk title since 1994 with a 23-10 record, the 20th ranked Cougars proceeded to win their first Central District championship to earn its first ever berth in the JUCO World Series.  Barton dropped its opening game of the national tournament before a heartbreaking bottom of the ninth walk-off homerun to the NJCAA defending and eventual national champions of 14th ranked Chipola College concluded the Cougars’ historic season at 47-15.

Eight Cougars earned post-season honors highlighted by Kaden Fowler's selection to the first team of both the All-KJCCC West and All-Region VI teams.  Landing on the first team conference and earning second team honors were fellow sophomore Brady Michel along with freshman Brett Erickson.  Sophomores Brett Bonar and Josh Hendrickson, along with freshman Zach Curry, landed on the second team of the conference selections while Carson Engroff and Dawson Pomeroy concluded their Barton careers with honorable mention conference honors.

The Cougars assaulted the program record book in multiple categories highlighted by the top achievements of Michel (Doubles-29), Hendrickson (Wins-11), and freshman Tanner Howe (Appearances-29).

For the fourth straight year under Coach Biggs, the Cougars achieved a cumulative 3.20 GPA or better in the classroom to continue the long standing excellence in the classroom in concluding the 2017-18 academic year with a 3.23 GPA.

Coach Biggs’ third year at the helm resulted in a second place conference finish and a 42-18 season concluding in the elite eight of Region VI.

Voted by his peers and awarded the KJCCC West Division Coach of the Year, Coach Biggs had eight players from the 2016-17 squad earned post-season honors led by the first team NJCAA All-American award of Central Missouri signee Michael Sinks.  A sophomore from Lawrence, Kansas, Sinks had a record breaking season capping his two-year Barton career, including becoming the first Cougar baseball player to land on the national first team while joining joins four previous Cougars to earn the national distinction.

Sinks was joined on the All-Region VI team by three other Cougars:  first team conference pitcher of the year freshman Jarrett Seaton, sophomore fellow pitcher Mason Hiser, and sophomore Corrigan Bartlett.  Four other Cougars landed on the all-conference team in freshmen Dawson Pomeroy and Kaden Fowler and sophomores Taylor Langston and Cole Henley.

The Cougars also excel in the classroom placing third nationally and tops in Region VI with a 3.42 GPA for the 2016-17 school year, the third straight year in the Biggs era of achieving a 3.20 GPA or better.  The program can also boast the College’s top graduation honor as Bartlett was selected as one of two outstanding graduates as selected by Barton faculty and staff. 

In Biggs’ second season, the Cougars finished 29-27 overall and 15-17 in the rugged Jayhawk Conference boasting an 18-10 record at home.  For the second consecutive season in the Biggs era, four Cougars landed on the All-Conference team including three freshman giving Barton a solid nucleus to the 2016-17 season.   Biggs also led his team off the field where the Cougars accumulated a 3.24 GPA for the second straight year of a 3.20 GPA or better.

In his first season at the helm, the Cougars went 26-27 and 16-16 with four players earning post-season honors including three landing on the All-Conference team and two earning Gold Glove Awards.  In addition to the on-field accomplishments, four players earned individual national recognition for their work in the classroom helping lead the team to a 16th overall national placing with a 3.23 GPA which led the Jayhawk West and was 5th best in Region VI.

A Great Bend native playing second base for Barton from 2004-2006, Biggs finished his collegiate playing career at Fort Hays State University before returning to assist the Cougars in 2008.

Starting 105 out of his 108 appearances for the Cougars, Biggs was a 1st team All-Jayhawk West second base selection his sophomore year at Barton hitting .300 to go along with his .958 fielding percentage. Biggs also earned honorable mention conference recognition his freshman season hitting .335 with a .962 fielding percentage.

Continuing his collegiate career at Fort Hays State University, Biggs added to his postseason honors at the next level.  In his senior season Biggs led the Tigers in runs scored with 58, as well as, posting a .975 fielding percentage to earn honorable mention All-MIAA honors.

Biggs also played summer baseball during his collegiate playing career, helping the Park City Cowboys to a 7th place finish in the NBC World Series. He also earned a Rawlings Gold Glove for his play at 2nd base with the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League.  In the summer prior to returning to Barton to begin his coaching career, Biggs helped the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League coaching the hitting and infield where he produced 3 infielders to the NWL All-Star Team in the summer of 2008.

Biggs and his wife Kaylee have three daughters, Logan, Lakyn and Landyn.
