No. 20 Barton Baseball finishes the regular season splitting doubleheader with Coffeyville
The No. 20 Barton Community College baseball team split its non-conference doubleheader with Coffeyville Community College on Wednesday evening winning the opener in walk-off fashion 6-5 before falling 11-9 in the nightcap.
Trailing by a pair entering the bottom of the seventh, Hunter Alvord's game tying two-run home run followed behind a trio of walks loading the bases created Tate Blasi's walk-off sacrifice fly and game one victory.
In the nightcap Hayden Oviatt's second inning grand slam ignited a six-run frame and 6-1 lead until an hour-long weather delay spurred the momentum onto the Red Ravens side outscoring Barton 10-3 over the final seven innings to salvage the doubleheader.
The split results conclude Barton's regular season at 40-11 overall while Coffeyville finishes 32-18 on the season after mother nature washed out the final two games scheduled for Friday in Coffeyville.
Next up for the Cougars is the opening round of the Region 6/Plains District Tournament beginning May 7-9 in the best of three game format held at Lawson-Biggs Field against the eighth-place finisher out of the Jayhawk East.
Game 1 Recap
Trailing 1-0 after a one-out solo shot in the top of the first, Wyatt Yetter's leadoff second inning double ignited three-straight two baggers with Blasi's producing the tying run and Kyle Walker's pushing Barton in front 2-1 through two.
A trio of Coffeyville singles in the top of the third knotted things at 2-apiece with the Cougars answering in the home half on John Connors two-out rally starting double crossing home on Yetter's second base knock in as many innings handing Barton the lead back at 3-2.
Deadlocked at 3-3 following a Red Raven sacrifice fly in the fourth, Coffeyville reclaimed the lead with a sixth inning single and insurance run coming home in the seventh created off Barton's lone error in the opener.
Following a groundout to kickstart the home seventh, the next five Cougars would reach base with Tyler Janssen's walk sparking the first of four free passes in the frame while Alvord's ensuing no-doubt 16th home run of the season tying things up at 5-all.
Tree straight walks to Ayden Hadley, Connors and Yetter loaded the bases with Blasi needing just two pitches producing the walk-off sacrifice fly to right field capping the seventh inning three-run comeback.
Anthony Treto tossed the opening 5.0-innings in earning a no-decision allowing five hits, three runs with a walk. Jackson MacWilliams handled the sixth surrendering a run on two hits and two strikeouts.
Landon Haines (4-0) secured the victory scattering a pair of hits and an unearned run in his inning of work.
Both teams collected nine hits apiece while the Cougars produced seven of their nine for extra bases behind six doubles and Alvord's tying home run in the seventh.
Game 2 Recap
Similar to the opener, the Red Ravens got off to a 1-0 advantage with another solo-shot home run in the first at-bat.
The Cougar offense broke through in the bottom of the second with Oviatt pushing Barton to the lead with a grand slam for his fourth fence clearer of the season after loading the bases with no outs off Connors leadoff walk, Yetter single and first of two errors in the frame allowing Walker to reach.
Coffeyville's second error of the inning facilitated two more Cougar runs with back-to-back Blasi and Alvord RBI doubles concluding the six-run response and 6-1 lead.
Following an hour-long weather delay, the tide quickly faded with the Red Ravens drawing within one with a four run third inning when play resumed later backed behind a six run sixth pushing Coffeyville in front 11-6.
Making one final push in the home sixth, Barton responded with the final three tallies cutting the deficit to 11-9 profiting behind a trio of walks, three wild pitches and Yetter two-out single plating a pair.
Starting hurler Braden Hauschel took a no-decision going 2.2-innings. The freshman allowed just one run before the weather delay, finishing with five hits surrendered, five runs (four unearned) with a walk and five strikeouts.
Cade Kunz (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season with 2.2-innings yielding a hit, three runs, walking three and fanning a pair of Red Ravens.
Jack Dilley was strong over his 3.1-innings in relief permitting one hit, a walk and career high five strikeouts.
