SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist swimming and diving opens the 2017-18 season by hosting the Shawnee Invitational at the Shawnee Splash Water Park Friday afternoon.
Â
This is the first meet for the Bison and Lady Bison as official members of NCAA Division II, and the only non-intrasquad meet at home this season. Head Coach
Dr. Samuel Freas is excited to see his teams in action.
Â
"This will be the only time you can see our swimmers compete against other competition, and we will also feature diving," said Freas. "Come out and watch world-class athletes perform right here in Shawnee."
Â
Admission to the four-team meet is free. Along with OBU, Tabor, Barton Community College, and Oklahoma Christian will compete in the outdoor setting. Friday will mark the first-ever meet for Oklahoma Christian's fledgling program. Swimming events are set to begin at 3 p.m. with diving interspersed throughout the competition.
Â
Tammy Price and
Victoria Fonville will lead the way for the Lady Bison. The pair combined for 11 First or Second Team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors last season.
Genesis Veliz, a NAIA diving champion, will return to the diving board for OBU.
Â
Six-time First Team All-RMAC sprinter
JP Goyetche begins his senior campaign Friday along with senior
Chad Brandon, owner of five First Team-All RMAC honors from last season.
Otto Lehtonen is expected to dive for the first time this year after a championship performance in the one-meter competition and a runner-up finish in the three-meter at the 2017 RMAC Championships.

The Shawnee Splash Water Park is located at 101 E. Highland Street in downtown Shawnee.
