The afternoon started off well for the Barton Community College volleyball team but the 4th ranked Saints of Seward County Community College put a damper to the early excitement in rolling to a straight set 25-22, 25-13, and 25-15 victory at the Barton Gym.
The Cougars drop their first loss of the conference season slipping to 2-1 and 9-5 on the year while Seward County's eight straight victory at the Barton Gym improves the Saints to 5-0 in Jayhawk play and 11-2 overall.
Barton will next travel to co-leader Colby Community College (5-0, 12-1) on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. first serve at the Community Building.
First set action was all Cougars early by holding a 15-10 edge before a combination of Barton errors and the Saints getting hot began to turn the tide with a 11-5 spurt to grab a lead they would never relinquish the rest of the afternoon.
Having the opening frame feel like an opportunity loss, Barton would never recover falling behind 13-6 in the second set on the way to the twelve point loss then looking up to a 15-8 score in the third leading to the ten point match clincher.
A paltry .012 attack was one story of the night against a bigger Seward County front line but the Cougars also didn't help themselves by committing twenty-one errors, one less than the squad's total kills.
Migle Mazurkeviciute led the team with seven kills as Agnieska Paskevic put up a season low eighteen assists. Karina de Oliveira led the back line with twenty-one digs with Eduarda Souza recording ten while Mazurkeviciute had eight, to go along, with a team high pair of service aces.
