Splitting matches on the first day of the Barton Classic, the Barton Community College volleyball team won both matches Saturday including a conference victory to finish 3-1 over the weekend.
The Cougars opened Friday's action with a four set victory over Clarendon College (25-14, 25-12, 14-25, 25-18), rolling to the easy first two set wins before putting the Bulldogs away in the fourth following a third set loss. Barton took the Friday evening nightcap first set against Cloud County Community 25-21 but came out on the short end of tough 26-24 and 27-25 games before falling 25-21 in the fourth.
Saturday's action looked like it may be a long day for the Cougars, totally out of sync with a new lineup in dropping the opening set to Casper College 25-14. The Cougars regrouped in the second in building a seven point lead, fighting off the Thunderbirds' 9-0 run, to later even the match 26-24. Facing set point in the third at 24-21, the Cougars battled back for the tie, only to face another set point before rallying with the final three points to lead the match on a 27-25 score. The Cougars' comeback seemed to deflate Casper as Barton would string stretches of eight straight and nine straight to easily win the match 25-11 and hand the Thunderbirds their lone loss of the Classic having already defeating Region VI members Pratt, Butler, and Cloud County.
The Cougars wrapped up the Classic with a Jayhawk Conference match, defeating Pratt in straight sets 25-12, 25-16, and 25-22.
Now 2-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 4-6 overall, Barton will have the week away from competition before heading to Baytown, Texas, for four matches in the Lee College Invitational.
