Barton women capture 29th Region VI Indoor Track and Field Championships #GoBarton

The fourth ranked Barton Community College women's track and field program captured its 29th Region VI Indoor and 16th Jayhawk West title this past Saturday at the 2020 Region VI/KJCCC Championships held at the Robert Plaster Center location at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Cougars won eight events throughout the two-day competition, recording twenty-four personal and/or season bests. The squad also added two more national qualifiers, bringing the total to twenty-seven, as the Cougars now begin preparation for the NJCAA Indoor Championships March 6-7 at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Final Region VI standings had Barton atop with 169.33 points, distancing Cloud County's 128.33 with Butler in third with 123 points. In the KJCCC West rankings, Barton's 204 took the title ahead of Cloud County's 184.50 as Hutchinson placed third with 123 points.

Barton's program record book also took some rewriting on the day with five new or moving up the ranks on the program's top-ten best performance list.

Barton women's track and field Ana da Silva awarded the Female Field Athlete of the 2020 Region VI Indoor Championships Earning the female Field Athlete of the Meet, freshman Ana da Silva battled with teammate sophomore Fiona Richards in the two throwing events as the duo went 1-2 in the shot put and weight throw. On Friday, Richards took the top spot in the shot put as the current school record holder didn't match her best but still put up a 14.85m (48-08.75) mark for the field to chase. Silva came close at 14.76m (48-05.25) to post the program's sixth best throw. In Saturday's weight throw event it was time for Silva to shine, marking a program second best 18.28m (59-11.75) to win over Richards' personal best 17.04m (55-11.00) to move up into the record book's fifth slot.

Barton women's track and field Jessi Kindscher in the pole vault at the 2020 Region VI Indoor Championships A tradition rich program but not known for its pole vaulters with few competitors through the years, Jessi Kindscher put her name in the second spot of the all-time list in just her second meet of the season as the freshman rose to a 2.79m (9-01.75) height in placing second in the region.

Staying in the field, the Cougars won all the jumping variety events. Freshman Annia Ashley won two of them, striking the sand in a program sixth best triple jump distance of 12.64m (41-05.75) before capping her day with the high jump gold with a 1.66m (5-05.25) height. On Friday Ashley placed third in the long jump with the first of her personal bests (5.97m, 19-07.00) as Shemia Odaine's personal best of 6.01m (19-08.75) took the top spot. Arianna Hayde's season best 5.71m (18-09.00) placed fourth while Reygan Brown's personal best finished third in the triple jump at 11.52m (37-09.50).

Two new qualifying performance crossed the timeline. On Friday it was Kalli Anderson clocking a 24.86 time in the 200m prelims, timing a still qualifying time of 25.06 on Saturday in placing seventh, one spot behind Sharikae Campbell who is already qualified. Also on Saturday, Sasha Brown placed second in the 600m clocking a qualifying 1:36.20 with Samantha Amador also posting a new personal best with a ninth place time of 1:43.18.

Barton's first track individual champion came from Yoveinny Mota in Saturday's 60m hurdles. Having timed a program second best effort earlier in the season, Mota had no trouble winning the title by .16 of second crossing in 8.68. Aquila St. Louis and Hayde, who both had a busy weekend by competing in the Pentathlon, placed third and seventh with 8.89 and 9.29 times respectively.

T'Nia Riley earned the Cougars' next track gold, clocking a season best 7.41 with Sharikae Campbell finishing seventh at 7.67 after sprinting to a personal best 7.62 in prelims.

Hayde and St. Louis led three Cougars in the two-day pentathlon, taking second and third in accumulating 3289 and 3074 points respectively. Hayde won the high jump with a season best 1.58m (5-02.25) height, tied St. Louis in the long jump (5.25m, 17-02.75), and had a second place in the finale 800m on a personal best 2:41.30 effort and behind St. Louis in the 60m hurdles. Deisiana Teixeira, who competed for the first time of the indoor season, placed second in the shot put at 10.07m (33-00.50), helping the freshman to an eighth place standing overall with 2314 points.
