Records fall as Barton Track and Field wins five events at the Black and Gold Invite #GoBarton

Records fell this past weekend at Iowa City, Iowa, as the Barton Community College track and field program won five events in the Black and Gold Invite hosted by the University of Iowa.

Action began on Friday in just the weight throw events with sophomore Phillipe Barnett rewriting program history with a meet winning 19.84m (65-01.25) toss to break Alencar Pereira's record set last season of 19.79m. Fabio Hessling was also impressive in the event, making his collegiate debut with a national qualifying 17.11m (56-01.75) mark in placing 6th overall and ranking 4th nationally.

On the women's side, Ana da Silva set a new personal best, chalking a national qualifying 17.43m (57-02.25) throw to rank 4th best on the program chart in placing 5th overall in the event. Silva met qualifying standards again on Saturday, placing 2nd in the shot put with a personal best 13.94m (45-0.00)

Joining Barnett as a record breaking performer on the weekend, Shakwon Coke sailed past the meet record in the long jump, besting the competition 7.60m (24-11.25) to now lead both the long and triple jump national lists.

Jumper Annia Ashley competed in the high jump for the first time in Barton's three meets, rising to 1.70m (5-07.00) to win the event. Shemia Odaine led the long jump entries with a 5th place national qualifying mark of 5.70m (18-08.50) while Reygan Brown led the triple jumpers with a 4th place leap of 11.23m (36-10.25) to also reach national standards.

The women were also strong on the track, led by T'Nia Riley's 60m gold medal spring of 7.44 seconds for the fourth best national time. Yoveinny Mota placed 6th with a personal best 7.62 as Sharikae Campbell came in 7th after setting a new best in the prelims at 7.67.

Riley would later pick up her second gold in 4x400m relay, teaming with Christal Mosley, Shemia Odaine, and Cameron Hinton to clock a national leading 3:46.93 time.

Aquila St. Louis led a pair of Cougars in the 60m Hurdle finals, tying for second place in a clocking of 8.82) while Arianna Hayde earned the 7th spot joining St. Louis as a national qualifier with a personal best 9.05 in the prelims.

Barnett's winning performance in the meet's first event, followed by Coke's jumping championship in the middle of the schedule, the Barton men captured its third title in the meet concluding 4x400m relay with Caleb Boger, Davonte Burnett, Denzel Feagin, and Jevon O'Bryant passing the baton in a nation's second best 3:13.32 time.
