Nineteen national qualifiers and three top placing join pair of record book entries in Barton Track and Field season opener #GoBarton

The Barton Community College track and field teams opened up the 2020 indoor season on Friday with nineteen national qualifying performances competing in the Ted Nelson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Winning three of the events amongst its seven Top-2 placings, the Cougar men compiled seventy-one points in finishing runner-up to UL-Lafayette in the seventeen team field while the Lady Cougars' ten national qualifying performances and five Top-4 finishes highlighted the 10th place team standing with thirty-three points.

Two program record book entries were etched on the day, the first coming from Phillipe Barnett in placing second overall on a program's sixth best weight throw of 18.66m (61-02.75) with fellow sophomore Fiona Richards shot put program seventh best heave of 14.70m (48-02.75) finished third overall.

The Barton men had three gold performances competing in ten of the sixteen events. Deshaun Jones captured the first of the titles, hurdling his way to a 7.94 clocking in besting the thirty-four man field. The women's field was equally as crowded with Yoveinny Mota taking third place in 8.75 as Aquila St. Louis finishing seventh in 9.23.

A pair of Cougars battled it out in the short track events leading Barton to a 1-2 finish in both the 60m and 200m races. Caleb Boger led three Cougars in the 60m finals, bettering his preliminary time to win the short track in 6.77, just .03 seconds ahead of teammate Davonte Burnett with Karon Dean taking the seventh spot with a 6.95.

Burnett would get the upper hand in the 200m, earning the gold in 21.14 while Boger clocked a 21.26 for the runner-up. In the women's version of the 200, T'Nia Riley's first race as a sophomore earned the third placing with a 24.47 time.

Christal Mosley led all Barton entrants in the 400m with a runner-up 56.18 time as Adidas unattached international competitor Jessica Beard winning the race with a 53.47 clocking. In the 800m variety, Sasha Brown earned a fourth place showing with a 2:21.83 in meeting national qualifying standards as well.

Shakwon Coke came up less than four inches away from the long jump title to lead five Cougars in the event, soaring to a runner-up and national qualifying standard 7.39m (24-3.00). Anderson Greaves placed 10th overall at 6.81m (22-04.25) while multi-event athlete Kaleb Ambrose setting a new personal best 6.21m (20-4.25) in finishing 26th in the standings.
