The Barton Community College track and field team completed their second meet of the season this past Friday in Lubbock, Texas, at the Red Raider Invitational hosted by Texas Tech University.
Exceeding the national qualifying standards with nineteen overall performances, included were the addition of four more to the list as the Cougars also had seventeen new personal best efforts.
Latavia Maines left Lubbock as the shot put champion by over two feet and nearly returned to campus with a school record. Fresh off last week's shot put performance of jumping into the program's second spot, Maines nearly put her name at the top of the list, coming up just a quarter of an inch from Cassandra Lee's 2004 school record in marking a 15.47m (50-09.25) on her second throw of the event. The sophomore from Centralia, Illinois, also put another 15-plus meter mark on the board, becoming the first Barton female with multiple feats as her sixth and final throw of the day landed at 15.16m.
Three of the four new additions to Barton's national qualifying list came from the women's squad. Maines' fellow field teammate Kameliah Style punched her ticket to the national championship by placing sixth in the weight throw with a personal best 16.01m (52.06.50).
The other two tickets came in the "B" Section of the 200m dash as Anitria Sangster clocked a personal best 25.27 while Sharikae Campbell recorded a personal best 25.44. Despite all five of the Cougars entries in the "B" Section, four Barton's times placed in the top fifteen and within the national qualifying mark as T'Nia Riley won the section and placed 10th overall with a 24.50 clocking, Kaytie Black tied her best with a 25.20 to rank 13th overall, and Sangster and Campbell placing 14th and 15th respectively.
The Cougar men's lone new qualifier came from Kenroy Williams in the 600 yard event. Running the yard version of the distance for just the second time, Williams' time of 1:11.42 converted to 1:19.99 of the 600 meters to meet the national qualifying by nearly three seconds.
