Barton women track and field team win half of Region VI events, captures outdoor championship
The Barton Community College women's track and field team captured the program's 26th Region VI Outdoor Championship on Saturday as the Lady Cougars won eleven of the twenty-two events this past weekend at Garden City Community College's Broncbuster Stadium. Adding the title to its Region VI Indoor championship, the Lady Cougars didn't compete in three events but dominated the championship in cold and blustery conditions nonetheless while also being crowned the Jayhawk West Conference champions. The region title was the first for Barton since 2009 racking up 189 points to unseat defending region champion Coffeyville Community College by twenty-four points and running away with the conference title by sixty-three points over runner-up Butler Community College.

Within the many individual titles, multiple standout performances dotted the Barton roster including the multi championships of Ayesha Champagnie, Sabrina Mason, and Holly Pierce.
Earning the female High Point Athlete of the Meet, Champagnie began her dual championship thirty-six point meet with a school fifth best effort 46.95m javelin throw to easily capture the Saturday morning event while giving Barton its first title of the day. Finalizing the day in the shot put, Champagnie slipped into the nation's top ten with a 14.08 champion throw for her career best and ninth all-time in school history.
The multi-event talented freshman picked up another seven points with a 1.61m second place tie in the high jump, six points with a third place 5.53m leap in the long jump, and an additional three points taking third in the 100m hurdles in 14.68.
Sophomore Holly Pierce's two wins came in the distance races beginning Saturday with the 3000m steeplechase and ending the day with a national qualifying time in the 5000m. Already having the school's second best time, the Texan sophomore blew past the field by nearly thirty-seven seconds recording a historical fourth best 12:24.14 time before wrapping up her day with breaking away late for a personal best 19:25.93 locking in her second national qualifying event.
While Champagnie and Pierce were doing damage in the field and distance events respectively, Sabrina Mason controlled the sprints winning two individual and one relay event in accounting for 24.5 points. Mason began her three title day anchoring the 4x100m relay team of Tasha Frazier, O'neisha Glover, and Tamara Style to a first place 46.92 time then two hours later taking the 100m sprint title with the only sub-twelve second time breaking the line in 11.99. Leading three Lady Cougars in the top six of the 200m, Mason's 24.63 took the title with Glover's 25.35 good for fourth and Danashka Lawrence getting the sixth spot with a 25.51. Mason also anchored the 4x400m relay of Glover, Widline Lageroy, and Brooklyn Polk to a runner-up finish clocking a 3:56.80.
Chenelle Ricketts led a 1-2 punch in the 400m with a national qualifying time of 56.94 with Polk grabbing the two slot at 57.60.
Frazier also had a three championship day beginning with the 4X100m relay before a 5.85m championship leap in the long jump being joined by Champagnie's third place finish. Frazier then moved over to the 100m hurdles leading three Lady Cougars in the top seven taking the title in a 14.13 time. Champagnie finished sixth while Brianna Payne grabbed two points coming in seventh .27 seconds behind Champagnie at 14.95.
Setting a personal best in the hammer throw, Michelle Tomlin won her middle event of the day with a nation's best 51.62m throw. Earlier in the day Tomlin earned five points with a 40.70m fourth place discus throw then would up her weekend with a fifth place 13.26m finish in the shot put.
Next up for the Lady Cougars will be a trip to Levelland, Texas, for the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships held May 17-19.
