Sumaia's title leads Barton performances at Collin Fall Cougar Open #GoBarton

Barton women's tennis player Claudia Sumaia returns a forehand

The Barton women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of the season on a high note as the Cougars competed at the weekend's Collin College Fall Cougar Open held in Plano, Texas.

Claudia Sumaia went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend as the tournament's No. 3 Flight top seed rolled through the competition to the title. Receiving a first round bye, Sumaia rolled up Kea Sandoval of SE Oklahoma 6-1, 6-0 before dispatching Collin College's Mariah Gonzalez in an even more impressive twin 6-0 blankings. Taking on second seeded Chantal Lozano of SE Oklahoma, the sophomore completed the path by 6-3, 6-2 scores to claim the title.

In Flight 1 singles, Alexandra Abyasova earned a hard fought opening 6-3, 6-4 win over North Central Texas College's Birthe Nulens to earn a tough quarterfinals matchup with the top seed Danja Jolic of Lamar University. Dropping the first set 6-3, Abyasova evened the match with a 6-2 win but couldn't quite pull off the upset as the thrilling tiebreak went to Jolic by a 12-10 score.

After falling in the opening round 6-0, 6-0 of the No. 2 Flight to third seed Ana Jolic of Lamar, Mariane Lima responded on the backside of the bracket claiming the consolation title 8-4 over Southeast Oklahoma's Diana Budrik.

Sara Martin also played well for the Cougars, winning her third flight opening round with identical 6-1 wins over Collin's Rebekah Clark before having the weekend end by twin 6-1 scores to Lozano on her way to meet Sumaia in the finals.

In doubles play, Barton's top tandem of Abyasova and Sumaia took out host Collin's duo of Paula Acosta and Greta Von Pesche 8-3 before dropping a tough 9-8(2) tiebreak loss to the tournament's top seeded Sana Jolic and Denise Simonetti of Lamar.

The Cougars' No. 2 duo of Lima and Martin also went 1-1, disposing NCTC's Mar Mendoza and Annabella Natalini 8-3 before falling 8-0 to SE Oklahoma's second seeded Diana Budnik and Elizaveta Tregubova.
