Abyasova's title leads Barton women at Collin Fall Tennis Invitational #GoBarton

Barton's Sara Martin sets to return a forehand

The Barton County Community College women's tennis team battled through the Texas hot and humid conditions this past weekend coming away with a number of solid performances in Collin College's Cougar Fall Invitational held in Plano.

Freshman Alexandra Abyasova went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend paving the way for the Cougars. Abyasova opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-2 opening round victory over Suzuka Nishino. After dropping the opening set 3-6 in the semifinals, Abyasova bounced back cruising to a 6-1 victory before outlasting Samantha Wong 10-5 in third set tiebreaker clinching a spot in the No. 1 singles championship match. In the championship tilt, Abyasova made short work on top seed Kathy Joseph 6-0, 6-2 to claim the No. 1 singles title.

In the No. 2 singles draw, Claudia Sumaia clinched a spot in the semifinals with an opening round win over Paula Acosta 6-3, 6-1. Sumaia fell short in a toe-to-toe match with Ivengar Svaksha 10-8 in the third before falling in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to Stephanie Joseph for third place.

Derby freshman Haley Vinroe also finished with a fourth place showing for the tournament posting a 1-2 record over the weekend. Vinroe notched an opening round three set thriller winning the 8-game pro set 10-8 before falling in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1 to Adrienne Large. Jolynn Scriven claimed the third place medal beating Vinroe in identical 6-1 set scores.

Falling in the opening round, Barton's other No. 1 singles entrant Mariane Lima and No. 2 singles Sara Martin had strong backside performances before falling in the consolation finals.

In the first flight of doubles action, the tandem of Abyasova and Sumaia rolled through their opening round 8-2 over Svaksha Lyengar and Suzuka Nishino. The duo clinched a spot in the finals as opponents Paula Acosta/Greta Von Peschke defaulted in the semifinals but the title came up short in being on the down side of an 8-1 score to Kathy Joseph and partner Samantha Wong.

After falling 8-0 in the opening round to doubles champions Joseph and Wong, Lima and Martin made a backside top flight run before falling in the consolation finals 8-2 to Iyengar and Nishino.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Jones and Vinroe finished 1-2 in round robin action.

Barton's next action comes Monday in a short trip to Hays to take on Fort Hays State University in a 2:00 p.m. first serve scrimmage.
