13th ranked Lady Cougar tennis drops conference finale to No. 7 Seward County #GoBarton #RoarCougs

The Barton Community College women's tennis team came out competitive Monday afternoon but the 7th ranked Saints were too tough player-to-player in blanking the 13th ranked Lady Cougars 9-0.

Barton's top two doubles' tandem started off hot at the Ellinwood Grade School tennis courts, each racing out to early leads before succumbing down the stretch by identical 8-5 scores. The Cougars top duo of 17th ranked Julia Candiotto and Mariane Lima pushed the Saints' 5th ranked duo of Patricia Panta and Maria Aveiga while in the No. 2 matchup Claudia Sumaia and Gwendolen Sior took on Alena Macharova and Sofia Belluco.

The No. 3 matchup was all Saints as Alisa Handrugan and Eva Liu rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Cougars' Sara Martin and Gabrielle Herzog.

As expected, the feature matchup on the singles side came in the No. 3 slot with 45th ranked Sumaia looking to avenge Friday's loss in Texas to the Saints' 24th ranked Macharova. Unlike three days prior when Sumaia took the first set, today was Macharova getting the upper hand in grabbing the first 6-1. Sumaia fought back with a 6-4 victory in the second but again Macharova prevailed by Friday's identical 10-6 score in the tiebreak.

Barton (5-4) and Seward County (10-4) will again tangle before the national tournament as the two will be joined by 8th ranked Cowley College (9-8) for the Region VI Championships in Liberal tentatively set for Friday, April 26.
