Barton tennis handed pair of defeats from Cowley College.
The Barton Community College teams faced its second straight ranked opponent Sunday in Ellsworth as the 13th ranked women's squad was beat 7-2 by 8th ranked Cowley College with the men being dealt an 8-1 defeat by the 7th ranked Tiger men.
Claudia Sumaia had a racket in both of the women's victories as the nation's 45th ranked player knocked off the Tigers' 34th ranked Aletta Macheli in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, for the freshman's sixth straight victory improving to 7-4 on the year. Earlier in the day Sumaia teamed with doubles partner Gwendolen Sior in the No. 2 slot to defeat Macheli and Mariana Rodriguez in an 8-3 score.
On the men's side, the Cougars had three singles matches be decided by the tie-breaker with Barton's lone win coming in the No. 5 slot as Octavio Carrasco fought back from a 6-1 first set defeat with a 6-3 positive result second set to pull out an eventual 11-9 tie break thriller over the Tigers' Moises Goncalves.
Other tiebreak near misses came in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots with 38th ranked Sebastian Pino falling 6-7 (10), 6-2, 10-3, to 35th ranked Valter Oshiro with Mariano Cabrera losing a tight 10-8 tiebreak to 43rd ranked Killian Dagneaux after each winning 6-4 sets.
The day's results leave the Barton women at 5-3 with the men slipping to 6-2 on the year while the Tiger squads improve to 8-8 and 10-6 respectively.
Next on the schedule is the Cougars' final home match on Wednesday as Barton welcomes nationally ranked Seward County Community College for an 11:00 a.m. first serve.
