Barton women’s tennis return from Texas trip to begin spring season.
The Barton Community College women's team kicked off their spring season this past weekend in chilly Texas coming up empty on a pair of matches before concluding with a win in the Collin College Super Bash held in the Plano metro.
The Cougars began Friday's two matches in taking on host Collin College. Barton's one and two doubles got the Cougars off to a 2-1 start but Collin's depth took the lower singles flights in winning 5-4.
In the afternoon match it was North Central Texas College getting the early jump in the match taking two of the doubles matches to pull out a deceivingly competitive 6-3 victory.
Barton had one match on Saturday, taking on a shorthanded Iowa Central Community College squad in winning four of the six matches played for a 6-2 overall score.
The Cougar men will also get their season started with three matches in Texas, making the trip to Plano for the Collin Super Six on Friday and Saturday. The women's squad will be idle until rejoining the men for a March 2 tangle at McPherson College.
The No. 1 doubles of Julia Candiotto and Mariane Lima won both their matches on Friday as the nation's 17th ranked duo began the day disposing Collin 6-1 before knocking off the 18th ranked squad of North Central 6-2 in the afternoon but stumbled to a 6-3 loss in Saturday's match against Iowa Central.
Also winning two of three matches, the No. 2 tandem of Claudia Sumaia and Gwendolen Sior upset Collin's 22nd ranked duo with a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker in Friday's first match. Dropping a 6-2 defeat in the afternoon to North Central's 21st ranked team, the duo bounced back with a 6-1 win over Iowa Central in Saturday morning's cold and rainy conditions.
Ranked 35th in the latest ITA rankings, No. 1 singles player Candiotto took care of two ranked opponents by identical 6-3 straight set scores on Friday, defeating Collin's 16th ranked player and North Central's 38th ranked, but lost a tiebreaker on Saturday to Iowa Central.
Two other Cougars also went 2-1 in the three matches, 45th ranked Sumaia in the No. 3 singles slot and No. 4 singles' Sior. Sumaia defeated Collin 7-5, 6-2 and Iowa Central's matchup in straight 6-0 sets with the freshman's lone loss coming in straight set 6-4 defeats. Sior lost her first match 6-1, 6-3, but rebound with two wins including a 7-6(5), 6-2 upset of North Central's 46th ranked player before surrendering just one game lost against Iowa Central.
Sara Martin picked up her lone win on the weekend with a 6-0 straight set win on Saturday in the No. 5 singles action while Brianna Talley received a forfeit win on Saturday after dropping both of Friday's No. 6 matches.
