A day after opening the season in Iowa, the Barton swim teams headed to Fremont, Nebraska, for another dual, this time breaking from the community college ranks to take on the University of St. Mary and host Midland University.
The standings were the same for both the men and women, placing second behind Midland and ahead of St. Mary. The Midland women took the dual with eight first place finishes to rack up 473.2 points with Barton leading all placers with seventeen to score 372.5 while St. Mary scored 301.9. On the men's side, Midland took ten of the eleven golds for 465.6 points while Barton's lone gold to go along with three runner-ups and six bronzes tallied up 407.0 points. St. Mary, who had just one placer, scored 350.6 points.
The undermanned women's squad won three events on the evening, one individually coming from Cassandre Zenon in capturing the 100 freestyle in 58.03 seconds. The freshman from France was also one of three Cougars have a pair of top-3 finishes, adding a bronze in the 200 IM with a 2:27.23 time.
Abigail Frye nabbed two individual silvers in the dual, clocking a 1:12.43 in the 100 butterfly and a 1:10.65 in the 100 backstroke.
Barton nabbed both of the freestyle relays clocking a 1:57.61 in the 200 and a 3:56.66 in the 400 with the second wave of Cougars taking third with a 4:19.77. The first group of 200 medley Cougars finished second in a time of 2:00.79 with the second group clocking a third place 2:10.71.
Also earning silver placings, Caroline Noble in the 200 freestyle with a 2:20.64 time and Kayla Hennen's 27.14 in the 50 freestyle.
Elizabeth Schrock pocketed a pair of third place finishes, the first coming in the 50 freestyle at 27.49 followed by a 59.86 in the 100 freestyle.
Other third placers were Sara Childs in the 200 freestyle (2:35.77), Kaylin Tobias in the 100 butterfly (1:18.08), and Selena Howard's 6:17.05 in the 500 freestyle.
Rory Smith led the men's squad with a pair of top-3 finishes by placing runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:03.33 time and third in the 200 IM in 2:09.49.
Five other Cougars placed third: William Spitz in the 200 freestyle (1:55.98), Leonard-Andrei Olaru in the 50 freestyle (22.98), Christian Taylor in the 100 butterfly (56.79), Isaac Panzer in the 100 freestyle (50.96), and Noah Childs in the 100 backstroke (59.09).
The men's lone victory came in the 200 freestyle relay, bettering the field by three seconds with a winning time of 1:31.84. The Cougars finished runner-up in the other two relays with a 1:42.97 in the 200 medley and a 3:21.04 in the 400 freestyle.
The Cougars will have nearly a month before its next competition, returning back to Fremont on November 3 with another double dual against Midland and Tabor College.
