Barton women bounce back with big second half in victory over Hesston.
The Barton Community College women's soccer team bounced back from a previous loss to score four second half goals Sunday at the Cougar Soccer Complex to better Hesston College 6-2.
The victory helps keep Barton in third place of the Jayhawk West at 6-3 and back to .500 on the year at 6-6 while Hesston slides to 2-6 and 3-7 overall.
Next up is a Wednesday trip to Dodge City Community College for a 1:00 p.m. kick as Barton tries to hold off the fourth place Conquistadors coming into the match at 4-4 in West action and 4-4-1 overall.
The Cougars launched forty-one shots on the afternoon, nineteen going against a 20mph north wind and twenty-two with a more calm 15mph advantage.
Hesston was held to just five total shots during the ninety minutes but the first put the Cougars in a hole less than six minutes into the action.
The Larks' goalkeeper Den Morita, who was under fire all afternoon in rejecting fifteen of Barton's twenty-one shots on frame, picked up a rare assist out of goal. Booting a kick up to the midfield, a combination of a Barton defensive miscue and heady play by Hesston's Annalys Hanna outracing the Cougar defense created a 1v1 situation leading Itzel Diaz with little chance in net giving the visitor's the edge just 5:41 off the clock.
Six minutes later Barton would get the equalizer with Domenica Pena striking far post coming off Kurumi Arakawa's third assist of the season. Pena struck again with less than twenty-four minutes left in the half to put away Larissa Modesto's through ball to rattle the nets for the sophomore's fourth of the year.
The lead grew thirteen minutes into the second half with Kadin Stinson sending a missile past a diving Morita to rattle the nets for the fourth time of the freshman's campaign.
Hesston's Paige Myers provided a response just ninety seconds later with a perfectly placed chip shot over Diaz to cut the deficit back to one.
Barton put the game away in a hurry eleven minutes later with three goals in less than two minutes, the first coming from Gabriela Freitas' third of the year at the 19:06 mark followed forty-three seconds later by a 25-yard launch from Arakawa. Pena, who dished out Freitas' goal, added another point towards her six point afternoon with 17:42 on the clock to set up Mercy Azanapo's fourth net shaker of the season.
