Strong second half propels Lady Cougars past Broncbusters #GoBarton

Barton women's soccer player Gabriela Frietas weaves through the defense

Six second-half goals propelled the Barton Community College women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory Saturday afternoon against Garden City Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

The win moves the Cougars to 5-2-0 in league play and 5-5-0 on the season while dropping the Broncbusters to 0-7-0 in conference and 0-11-0 overall. Barton will look to avenge an earlier season loss to the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College Wednesday evening in a 6:00 p.m. kick-off at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Playing to a scoreless tie through the opening half, head coach Ousmane Camara's speech delivered at halftime would pay off. Barton broke the scoreless affair just 1:32 into the second half as Gabriela Freitas recorded her first collegiate net rattler heading home Daniela Paez' cross sparking life into the Cougars offense.

Nineteen minutes later Alexsandra Fernandes' thru ball setup the eventual game winner as Kurumi Arakawa launched a 30-yard paint scraper on the bottom of the cross bar for her fifth goal of the season.

Little over a minute later Kadin Stinson added to the Barton lead nesting home her third goal of the year scoring from Freitas' fifth assist.

The lead exploded to four in a matter of four minutes as Fernandes' boot from just outside the eighteen dimed its way through traffic to nestle home beyond the outreached arms of Buster keeper Kaylee Keller.

Freitas added insurance to the scoreboard with 7:58 to play in launching a rocket upper-30 from twenty-five yards out growing the lead to 5-0.

Garden City's Catherine Small spoiled the Cougars' shutout in the 88th minute by taking advantage of a few Barton misplays to race towards goal before arching a shot just over the outstretched hands of reserve goalie Aida Saenz.

Joana Figueras closed out the day's scoring with 1:30 remaining, finishing off a perfect cross from Stinson in fluttering the net for the freshman's first collegiate goal.

Itzel Diaz captained the defense into the game's 66th minute in turning back one shot on frame as the Cougars surrendered just two shots during the afternoon.
