The Barton Community College women's soccer team picked up their first victory of the season Wednesday evening as six different players rattled the net in the 6-0 win at Garden City Community College.
Improving to 1-3 on the year, the conference opening victory dealt Garden City its fourth straight loss to begin the season. The Cougars' will look to carry the momentum into its next matchup on Saturday in a key early season Jayhawk West 2:00 p.m. kick-off hosting the 2-1 Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Barton put a trio of goals on the board in each half as Gabriela Freitas helped set up the first two in the first sixteen minutes of the contest.
Freitas dialed up the Cougars' first net shaker just 2:23 off the clock in finding Kurumi Arakawa as the freshman drilled far post beating Broncbuster keeper Kaylee Keller.
Getting fouled as the clock neared the sixteen minute mark, Frietas gave way to sophomore Georgia Lawton for the ensuing free kick opportunity resulting in a 25-yard strike to the far post giving Barton the 2-0 lead at 15:58 into the game.
It took the Cougars nearly thirty more minutes against the 15-20 south wind to rattle the nets again, but freshman Leticia Modesto stopped the drought in beating multiple defenders winding through the box before delivering a near post goal with twenty-seven seconds prior to intermission.
Flipping sides of the pitch for second half action, the Cougars nearly doubled up their shot selection in the final forty-five putting sixteen shots in the air to finish with a 25-1 shot differential over the Broncbusters.
Gisselle Melendez-Valles had the first of nine Barton second half shots on frame tickle the twine by scoring an unassisted goal just under the ten minute mark of the final forty-five.
A defensive steal near the mid-field by Enola Prassel set up the Cougars' fifth goal of the evening, quickly getting the ball to Modesto in feeding Mercy Azanapo for a net shaking laser from just outside the eighteen.
Four minutes later Larissa Modesto become the sixth Cougar net seeker, turning Arakawa's pass into a thirty-plus yard scoring strike to close out the tallies with 16:43 to play.
Freshman Itzel Diaz earned the victory in net, getting solid back line help in having to reject just one first half shot on frame before giving way to Aida Saenz for the final 27:08.
