Late goals lift Lady Cougars to 3-2 comeback victory over Dodge City

The Barton Community College women's soccer team scored two goals in the final fifteen minutes Wednesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex notching a 3-2 comeback victory over Dodge City Community College.  The victory improves the Lady Cougars to 1-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 2-2-1 on the season while dropping Dodge City to 1-2 in the West and 2-3 overall.  Barton's will return to the friendly home turf for its next match, a 1:00 p.m. Sunday kick off against Pratt Community College.  

Amber Miller gave Barton the early edge taking a pass from Analia Torres to beat the Conq keeper Emily Goldman far post scoring the Garden City freshman's first collegiate goal just 8:53 into the game.

Two minutes later Dodge City's Siobhan Longmore's free kick was uncleared by the Barton defense in the box resulting in Dominique Arzaga sending the equalizer into the net.  

Despite outshooting the Conqs 9-2 in first half action including a 6-1 edge on frame, the teams reached intermission tied up with some credit to Goldman rejecting a couple of point blank Barton opportunities.

The offensive aggression started to shift in the direction of Dodge City in second half action as the Cougars' Alexandra Capalbo faced numerous attacks including three golden Conq opportunities in a matter of ten minutes.   The fourth attack would rattle the net as Cynthia Rodela stuffed home a rebounded shot giving Dodge City a 2-1 lead with 21:50 on the clock.

In a sense of urgency, the Lady Cougars offense came to life picking up the pace and getting back to crisp passes across the field.  With a deep ball played into the corner, Rachel Craft battled two Conqs to win the ball then sent a cross into the box.  Megan Martinez settled the pass then sent in her second goal of the season tying the contest with 15:25 to play.  

Following Dodge City drawing a red card with 12:53 remaining and being a player short for the rest of the contest, the Cougars kept on the attack getting the game winner a little over three minutes later.  Launching nine shots in the contest including five on frame, forward Maddison Schofield picked an opportune time to score the Australian freshman's first collegiate goal sending a missile from outside the box deflecting off Goldman's gloves near post for the difference maker.

Schofield nearly made it a two goal advantage just a minute later but Goldman's tenth save of the game kept life in the Conqs' jerseys.  Pressing for the equalizer the Conqs produced a good attempt on a free kick with six minutes left then appeared to have netted the tying goal as Rodela once again got behind the defense but an offsides call negated the shot with 2:20 left.
