Real and freshman class step up to lead offensive flurry in 8-0 win over Cowley

Barton Community College women's soccer coach Aaron Avila knew he had perhaps his most talented group of freshman when the third year head coach signed the group last spring.  Tuesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex the developing players showed glimpses of a bright future for Barton Soccer accounting for all but one goal in the Lady Cougars 8-0 victory over Cowley College. The win improves Barton to 3-3-1 in Jayhawk play and 6-5-2 overall while dropping the Tigers to 1-7 in conference and 1-10 on the season. 

It was also a big day on the turf for Scarlett Real who solidified her name in the Barton record books.  The freshman from Dodge City scored five goals to etch her name in a tie for the fifth best single game goals scored and tacked on an assist to place in a sixth place tie for points in a single game.

Real got the Lady Cougar onslaught started with 18:25 left in the first half getting an assist to fellow freshman Sydne Harpenau.  Drawing the attention of the Cowley defense and drawing out goalkeeper Sandra Urrutia, Real split a pass through two defenders to Harpenau on the back post who easily one-timed to the back of the net.

Eliza Larsen scored her first goal as a Lady Cougar three minutes later as the freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah, finished off a perfect through ball from fellow freshman Maria Munoz just inside the 18' past the diving Urrutia.

Allowing no shots on goal the entire contest, defensive play set up the Lady Cougars third goal of the contest.  Keyed by a steal from sophomore Catlin Simon-Mans leading to a Lady Cougar throw in, Larsen took a Dania Rodriguez inbound pass hitting Real just outside the 8'.  Wheeling away from the defense, Real blasted a shot back against the grain increasing the lead out to three with 7:14 remaining in the half.

Bre Markham set up the first of Barton's four second half goals sending a long pass to Real just outside the 18'.  Real made her best yet smallest moves of the afternoon with a creative touch around a defender then dribbling twice before hitting inside far post with 33:50 remaining.  

With 15:43 remaining Real picked up the hat trick putting away a Harpenau cross to the top of the 8.  Four minutes later sophomore Millie York scored her first career goal as the defenseman from Hove, England, perfectly placed a 30' free kick just under the top post to increase the lead to 6-0.

As she did almost a month prior in a September 9 game against Kansas City Kansas Community College, Real scored her fourth goal of a contest unassisted for the second time this season.  Taking a Markham forward ball, Real split two defenders to race into the penalty box but was denied by backup goalkeeper Maddie Pegorsch.  With the rebound loose in the 8' Real beat Pegorsch to the ball tapping it in giving Barton it's seventh goal with 6:23 left.

Capping off her eleven point performance, Real received a Munoz pass outside the 18' and with no defense close by, dribbled unguarded leaving a defenseless Pegorsch on the ground as the ball touched the back of the net.

Barton will have five days until their next action as the Lady Cougars will head to El Dorado on Sunday, October 12, to take on No. 15 ranked Butler Community College in a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
