Lady Cougars on unlucky end of 2-1 home loss
The Barton Community College women’s soccer team had an unlucky day on the pitch Sunday at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex, falling 2-1 to Trinidad State Junior College. The loss dropped the Lady Cougars to 1-2-1 on the season while Trinidad State completes their trip to Kansas with a perfect 3-0 record after having defeated Garden City Community College and Pratt Community College earlier in the week. Barton will next turn its focus to conference play as the Lady Cougars host Dodge City Community College at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

With both teams enduring a 20-plus mph south wind, the Trojans had the first half advantage pelting the Barton defense with seven shots on goal forcing goalkeeper Maria-Elena Garcia to come up with numerous quality saves.
Looking to escape the wind and the Trojan attack in the first half, the first unlucky break for the Cougars occurred with just 12:15 remaining in the half as Yasmin Mookerdum's blast outside the 18' was bobbled by Garcia slipping just inside far post.
As the teams exchanged ends for second half play, the Cougars were looking for the attack advantage but was equally countered by the Trojans. Barton only managed four shots on goal while Trinidad State put up five.
Aliya Marshall finally found the back of the net as the sophomore from Wichita found the top corner inside the far post from outside the 18' to tie it up with 21:49 to play.
Five minutes later it was Trinidad State's Mookerdum again making the difference taking advantage of a defensive breakdown to subject Garcia to a one-on-one situation. Taking the pass from Braelah McGinnis, Mookerdum struck a low bouncing shot just outside the 8' that bounced over the outstretched Garcia's arms for the game winner.
Millie York, who set up Barton's game winning goal on Saturday, nearly put the equalizer on the board a few moments later only to hit the wrong side of the top post, a testament of the unlucky day the Lady Cougars faced in the loss.
In the earlier game of the Barton Classic, Western Nebraska Community College and the former Barton men's head soccer Kevin Kewley led Pratt Community College Beavers battled to a scoreless tie.
