Barton Wrestling completes dual season, readies for post season #GoBarton

The Barton Community College wrestling team completed its dual season on Monday, returning from Colby at the two-day KJCCC conference event coming up empty in its four competitions against ranked opponents.

Barton's next action will Saturday, February 22, in Miami, Oklahoma, with national tournament berths on the line at the NJCAA West/Central District Championships.

The No. 20 ranked Cougars surrendered eighteen points in each of its four duals, forfeiting open weight classes in the 165, 197, and 285 divisions.

Barton began its competition Sunday afternoon against 29th ranked Labette Community College with four victories in the seven matches but falling short 36-18 on the scoreboard. The Cougars' wins came from 9th ranked Drew Burgoon in the 141 division on an 18-2 technical fall, 9th ranked Gable Howerton with a 7-0 decision in the 157, 10th ranked Andrew DeArmond's 1:30 pin in the 174, and 9th ranked Joey Ewalt's 184 class 10-0 major decision. In addition to the three open classes, the Cougars also lost another six points with an injury default in the 149 division.

Sunday evening's class with 17th ranked Neosho County Community College didn't fare as well with Ewalt's 5-4 decision in the 184 class Barton's lone points in the 42-3 loss.

Late Monday morning the Cougars were back on the mat for its third dual, earning a major decision victory by 149 pound Kolby Droegemeier and an injury default for DeArmond in the 174 for Barton's points falling 44-10 to 17th ranked Cowley College.

Barton finished up competition in the afternoon session with a pair of mat victories, gaining an open weight forfeit, in a 28-15 loss to 22nd ranked Pratt Community College. Burgoon chalked up a 30-second back flattening with Ewalt's 7-1 decision concluding a 3-1 record in the four days, upping the sophomore's 184 dual tally to 5-2.

Burgoon, who just entered the rankings, went 2-2 on the weekend to raise his record to 4-3 overall.

DeArmond, ranked 10th in the 165 division, moved up a weight class to the 174 for the weekend, also going 2-2 with the first period fall followed by a tough 7-3 loss to 2nd ranked Tyson Villalpando of Neosho County on Sunday before receiving an injury default Monday morning and a short sided 7-3 decision against Pratt's Misael Monarrez.
