Barton women conqed in Dodge City #GoBarton

Barton women's basketball players Queen Ulabo and D'Shonda Hunt battle for a rebound

The Barton Community College women's basketball team ran into a determined Dodge City Community College squad Saturday afternoon at the Student Activity Center as the home Conquistadors pulled away for an 81-62 victory.

The loss snapped Barton's modest two-game win streak, dropping to 13-12 overall and into a third place tie with the Conquistadors at 9-7 in the Jayhawk West as Dodge City improves to 14-11 on the season.

Barton will seek to keep ahold of the conference placing on Monday in hosting sixth place Colby Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym while Dodge City heads to nationally ranked Seward County Community College.

Dodge City took the first quarter leading behind a five straight stretch before rattling off six straight in to complete a 11-2 run building a 23-15 lead.

The Barton deficit grew to ten after the opening bucket of the second frame with free throws from D'Shonda Hunt and an old fashioned three point play conversion by Hannah Valentine slicing the deficit in half. Richelle Turney's jumper at the five minute mark cut it to three but the Conquistadors buried back-to-back treys increasing the home squad's advantage back out to nine. A 6-0 Barton spurt put the Cougars back within reach but Dodge City closed out the half with a 4-2 edge to lead 38-33.

Dodge City blew the game open in the third quarter following Turney's jumper cutting it four as the Conquistadors owned the next three minutes with a 12-1 stretch building a fifteen point lead. The gap would grow to as much as twenty-four late in the quarter before KayCee Miller's three-pointer halted a 12-3 Dodge City advantage with the Conquistadors answering the triple with one of their own before the buzzer for a 67-43 lead to the fourth.

If Barton would add to one of its many comeback victories on the season, they would need to do it without its second leading scorer as Queen Ulabo fouled out with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Four straight to begin the final frame gave Barton a little momentum but the Conquistadors held the Cougars off as seventeen point gap with three minutes to play following consecutive Vanessa Oduah's steals and transition layups would be as close as it would get.

Hunt led the way with fifteen points with Turney and Valentine also reaching double figures.
