Barton rolls in 2nd half on way to 88-75 win; Fanshier hits 7 3-pointers

The Barton Community College women's basketball team rolled up 59 points in the 2nd half Wednesday night on its way to an 88-75 Jayhawk West win over Colby at the Barton Gym. Barton sophomore Alisha Fanshier tossed in 27 points - 21 in that 2nd half on 7-of-7 3-point shooting in the final 20 minutes. With the win Barton is now 4-3 in the West and 12-9 overall. Colby fell to 3-4 in the West and now stands at 8-14 overall. The Cougars are back on the road Saturday with a trip to Pratt to tangle with the Beavers in a 6 pm tip at Lesh Sports Arena.  

Highlights
Colby led most of the opening half and by as many as 6 points early in the half before Barton took the lead late and went to the locker room down by a pair at 31-29. Barton made just 9-of-37 shots in the half while Colby buried 11-of-22 to help propel them to the lead.

It took all of one possession to see what the 2nd half was going to look like. Barton got the ball to start the 2nd half and Shea Shoemaker tossed it to Fanshier who knocked down the 3-pointer, setting the stage for an incredible shooting half for Fanshier and the Cougars. The Barton lead steadily quickly, reaching double figures at 46-35 on a Raven Adams 3-pointer with 16:33 to play in the half. Meanwhile Fanshier just kept bombing away – treys with 13:43 left, 11 minutes, 8:27, 7:26 and on. She knocked down her 7th and final one of the half with 5:32 left to give Barton a 21-point lead at 81-60.

The 7 treys for Fanshier put her within one of a school record set during the 2008 season by both Ipek Turkyilmaz and Kristine Silaraja. Silaraja's 8 3's came in the 3rd place game at the NJCAA Tournament as she hit 7 in the opening half and went 8-for-10 in the game from behind the arc. Turkyilmaz went 8-fo-11 against Butler that year, hitting 4 in each half. Fanshier finished 7-of-9 for the game behind the 3-point line.

While Fanshier's 2nd half shooting stole the spotlight, Dionne Harris turned in one of her best games of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her 7th double-double. Harris also had 4 steals. Fanshier had 6 assists as did Christina Caddy, who ended with 15 points. Hannah Thornton tied Fanshier with game-high honors scoring 27 in a losing effort for Colby, hitting 8-of-8 from the field and adding 11 free throws. Kelli Crittenden handed out 10 assists for the Trojans in the loss and scored 10 points.

Barton connected on 22-of-33 shots from the floor in the 2nd half, hitting 10-of-14 3-pointers. Colby did just fine behind the 3-point line as well, hitting 9-of-16 for the game. The Trojans shot 48 percent from the field in the loss.

Barton heads to Pratt Saturday to bring the Jayhawk West race to a halfway point. For Barton it will be the 5th road contest in the 1st 8 games, giving Barton 5 of 8 at home the 2nd half of the West season.
