Cougars salvage tough weekend with win in finale
The Barton County Community College softball had a tough weekend in Concordia at the Cloud Spring Classic, dropping 4 of 5 games. Three of those losses were by 4 runs or less. The Cougars won the finale of the weekend, beating host Cloud County 15-0. Barton is now 4-10 on the season. Barton had its doubleheader with Cloud slate for Wednesday postponed until a later date. The Cougars will travel to Chanute to face Neosho Friday then on to Tulsa for tournament action this weekend.
Highlights
Barton opened the tournament with a 14-4 loss to Iowa Western as the Reivers scored 9 runs in the opening 2 innings. The Cougars scored 3 times in the 4th on the strength of Roxanne Longoria 2-run single. Erin Humphrey had 2 hits in the game.
The Cougars lost a 6-2 decision to Colby, again falling behind early as the Trojans scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st and 2 more in the 3rd for a 5-1 lead. Humphrey and Whitney Boeh each had 2 hits in the loss with Boeh and Alicia Salazar both homering in the game for the 2 Barton runs.
Barton lost another close contest to Hutch, falling 5-2 to end the day Saturday. After falling behind 2-0 the Cougars evened the score at 2-all in the 4th when Boeh doubled in Salazar and Megan Wedel singled in Myra Ramos. But the Blue Dragons scored 3 times in the 6th for the win.
Barton started Sunday off with a 3rd straight close loss, losing 4-1 to Iowa Lake. Barton had tied the game at 1-all in the top of the 4th on a fielder's choice RBI by Cheryl Raesz that scored Salazar. But Iowa Lake – like Hutchinson – scored 3 times in the bottom of the 6th for the win.
The Cougars closed out the weekend with a 15-0 thumping of Cloud, bolting to an 8-0 lead after 2 and plating 7 runs in the 4th for the run-rule. Raesz drove in 4 in the win and Salazar hit her 3rd homer of the season and drove in 3. Brigette Hitschmann threw a 1-hitter to pick up the win and improve to 2-4.
