The Barton County Community College men's tennis team began their 2019-20 campaign this past weekend at the Tiger/Jinx Invitational held in both Arkansas City and Winfield.
Oswaldo Cano went the furthest in the tournament for the Cougars, playing a trio of tough matches in the A-Draw before falling in the finals to top seeded Bruno Suiama of Oklahoma Baptist University 11-9 in the third set tie-break after the duo exchanged 6-4 set victories. Cano's path took out Javier Gonzalez of Cowley College 6-3, 7-5, before dispatching Andres Graterol of OBU 6-4, 6-2. The sophomore dropped the first set of his semifinal match 7-6, but bounced back to even the match with a 6-2 victory before gaining the final's berth in a grueling 10-8 victory.
The Cougars had four individuals reach the quarterfinals of their respective bracket with each getting bounced from the tournament by either the first or second seed with another being dispatched by opponent who won the bracket.
Reaching the B-Draw were sophomores Sebastian Pino and Octavio Carrasco before running into the top two seeds, sophomore Tom Letecheur in the C-Draw falling to the top seed, and Victor Pestana losing to the eventual D-Draw champion.
Carrasco and Pestana were the lone doubles duo to sniff the semifinals but fell 8-5 to the 5th seeded tandem.
Barton's next time on the court is Friday in the two-day Collin Invitational taking place in Plano, Texas.
