The title hopes of the Barton Community College men's soccer team were dashed Saturday evening in Daytona, Florida, as a 106th minute shot in the second golden goal period gave top ranked Pima Community College a 2-1 NJCAA National Championship victory over the 3rd ranked Cougars.
Completing the season with the program's highest ever placing, the breaking of Barton's seventeen game win streak ends the Cougars' season at 21-2-2 to match the 2010 squad's most victories in program history.
Pima's eighteenth straight victory earned the Aztecs their first national title after placing third in last year's Championship in finishing a program best 26-2 on the year.
Battling to a first half draw, the Aztecs were called for a handball 17:01 into the second frame resulting in freshman Tevin Rochester converting the penalty kick giving Barton the lead.
The Cougars controlled possession and was clearly the aggressor throughout the contest but 11:16 remaining for the College's 57th national championship, Pima's Isaias German put away Yuki Jahara's pass for the equalizer.
Scoreless through the first Golden Goal, Barton added to 'the story of the game' of missed opportunities after two attacks came up empty. With just 3:55 from a title shootout in the second overtime period, the Aztecs' new single season top goal scorer Hugo Kamentani netted the biggest of his 30 goals of the year by tapping Ricky Gordillo's pass high over onrushing Barton keeper Felipe Baeza to float across goal in setting off a Pima rushing onto the field in championship enthusiasm.
