Barton men's and women's soccer teams celebrating 2018 Jayhawk West title after victories at NW Tech

The Barton Community College men's soccer team captured the program's ninth Jayhawk West crown with a 2-1 victory Saturday in Goodland over Northwest Kansas Technical College.

The Cougars conclude the regular season atop the Jayhawk West standings at 10-0-2 improving to 14-1-2 overall while the Mavericks finish at 2-7-2 and 2-9-2 on the season. The Cougars will have a six day wait to get back on the pitch as Barton will host the first round of the Region VI playoffs on Friday. Game time and opponent to be announced soon.

A spectacular scissor kick goal gave Barton the lead twenty-two minutes left in the opening frame as the Cougars' leading scorer Gabriel Arraes met Nicolas Torres pass from the wing going horizontal at the six-yard line.

The Mavericks converted a penalty kick with thirty seconds left spoiling the advantage going into halftime.

Barton launched a handful of attacks against the Maverick goal in second half play but couldn't find the net as unlucky deflections and saves by the Maverick goalkeeper and defenders kept the sheet clean. With a second wave of Cougars hitting the turf, Barton continued the offensive attack but also received the defensive gem of the game as Felipe Baeza went full horizontal to deflect a potential Maverick goal with seventeen minutes left.

The Cougars continued the offensive attack to finally break through with the 3:30 game winner. Off the reset of a foul, Mario Magana's pass up field was one-touch redirected from Arraes to Sora Wakabayashi rattling the nets for the second time of the Japanese sophomore's season.

Barton Scoring:
23:03 – Gabriel Arraes (15), Assist Nicolas Torres (2)
86:30 – Sora Wakabayashi (2), Assists Mario Magana (9) and Gabriel Arraes (7)
