Arraes and Baeza earn Cougars sweep of KJCCC men's soccer awards #GoBarton

Barton Men's Soccer players Gabriel Arraes and Felipe Baeza

Gabriel Arraes and Felipe Baeza of the Barton Community College men's soccer team have been named the KJCCC's week five recipients of the player and goalkeeper honors.

The duo secured an equally offensive and defensive attack in the Cougars' three victories this past week resulting to a move atop the Jayhawk West standings at 4-0-1 and jumping back into the national poll at No. 17 with an 8-1-1 record.

Arraes increased his KJCCC lead by scoring in each of the three games to raise his season totals to eleven net shakers and twenty-five total points to also rank in the top ten nationally in both categories. The sophomore from Brazil began his week with a needed late 'cushion' goal in the victory over Garden City before scoring and distributing a goal in Wednesday's dominant win over Pratt. On Saturday Arraes provided the big boost for the Cougars in striking home the game tying goal at the 63rd minute as Barton would eventually prevail late for the 2-1 victory to assume the early driver's seat in the conference title race.

Rejecting three Garden City shots on Monday, Baeza was simply stellar in turning four shots away Wednesday against Pratt with point blank and leaping saves to keep the Cougars' sheet clean for the sixth time of the season. The sophomore from Chile was equally impressive in Saturday's big game in Concordia with the exception of an unlucky break of having a nineteen yard free kick to the back post bounce out of the mitts resulting in the Cloud County rebound goal.

Having also won the player award in week two of the season, Arraes' two-time status along with Mario Magana's week three award and Baeza's goalkeeping mate Oliver Semmle's week two honor gives the Cougars five distinctions so far in the season.

Barton's next action on the pitch comes Wednesday in a 4:00 p.m. kick-off hosting Northwest Kansas Technical College (1-4-0, 1-6-0).
