A buzzer beating net shaker saved the Barton Community College men's soccer team from a loss as the Cougars tied the contest a second prior to the regulation horn before dueling a pair of extra frames to come out with a 2-2 double overtime tie with Dodge City Community College in a thrilling Jayhawk Conference battle Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The early conference season pivotal stalemate sends Barton's record to 1-0-1 in league play and 5-1-1 overall while the Conquistadors move to 2-1-1 in the Jayhawk and 3-3-2 on the year. The Cougars return to the home turf on Monday in game three of the four-game home stand with a 4:00 p.m. kick hosting Garden City Community College.
Barton trailed twice in the contest, the final time lasting until the waning seconds of regulation when a clutch strike from Hiroo Kimura sent the Cougar bench into a frenzy.
Trailing by one with five seconds, Mario Magana's blast from forty yards out was met by the Conquistador goalkeeper Rafael Callegari who batted the ball towards the top of the eighteen. Settling the rebound and making a quick move on the onrushing Callegari, Kimura sent a rocket to the post pinpointed through two Dodge City defenders for the sophomore from Japan's third goal of the season.
Tied at one after the first forty-five minutes, Dodge City's Kieran Guthrie put the Conquistadors back out front 6:56 into the second frame off Cesar Alvarez' corner kick with a perfectly place backside header to beat the Cougars' goalkeeper Oliver Semmle to the back post.
Dodge City had also scored in the first seven minutes after kick-off to take the early 1-0 lead as Alvarez netted home a rebound after Semmle turned away Johnley Dezile's attack.
The Cougars went a man down a minute later on consecutive yellow cards, scrapping for the next twenty-six minutes until Tevin Rochester's equalizer with 13:40 left before halftime by drilling his third goal of the season to the far post giving Damia Viader his fourth assist of the year.
In the overtime periods, each team had an opportunity to end it with the Cougars launching the most attacks, the best coming from Viader but being denied by O'Neill.
