The Barton Community College men's golf team had their season come to an end Tuesday as the Cougars placed 7th at the Region VI/District III Championships held over the course of two days at Wichita's Crestview Country Club.
Playing 36 holes Monday on the Club's North Course, Barton carded a morning round of 318 before improving to a 310 in the afternoon session.
Following the first two rounds in 20mph consistent winds gusting up to 30mph, Tuesday's final round on the South course were more ideal as the Cougars shot a combined 304 to finish the tournament at 72-over 932.
The Cougars showed improvement in each of the three rounds, but so did the field of seven other teams keeping Barton from making a climb up the leaderboard.
In the NJCAA's toughest District featuring five Top-20 teams, the top five squads out of the District received a national tournament bid. Hutchinson won the tournament with a 9-over 869 combined score as the 3rd ranked Blue Dragons overtook 2nd ranked Indian Hills in the final round to win by one stroke. Seventeen strokes back was 7th ranked Iowa Western in third place with 15th ranked Garden City taking fourth and 19th ranked Dodge City four strokes back in fifth place overall.
Kansas City Kansas finished five strokes ahead of Barton for the sixth place with Fort Scott a distant 8th place behind the Cougars by fifty-six strokes.
Tom Gehring led the five Cougars in a tie for 25th of the 55-man field in part to firing an even par 72 in the second round completing the tournament at 15-over 230. Carlos Conceicao was one stroke behind at 16-over 231 in opening the three rounds with a morning 4-over 76.
Pontus Nordstrom was one of eight players on Tuesday's final round to shoot even or better, firing an even par 71 on the South course climbing into the 33rd overall spot at 19-over 234.
Antoine Martinot tied for 36th at 22-over 237 with Peeranat Suporn rounding out the Barton entries with a 34-over 249 in placing 43rd.
