Final round charge not enough as Barton men's golf season comes to an end in district play

The Barton Community College men's golf team concluded the three-day action of the Region VI and District III Championships on Tuesday with its best of three rounds but fell three strokes shy of a possible national tournament berth.  The No. 16 ranked Cougars closed with a combined 9-over 297 at Topeka's Firekeeper Golf Course, placing sixth on the nationally packed leaderboard, finishing their tournament and season with a 943.  Needing to at least place ahead of national host Garden City Community College to possibly receive an at-large berth, the Cougars' year ends with the district finish and fourth placing in the Region VI standings.

Holding true to the national rankings, top ranked Indian Hills Community College took the district crown by eight strokes closing with a team 7-under par to finish with a sixteen over 880 score.  No. 3 ranked Dodge City Community College placed runner-up with a 24-over 888, distancing No. 8 ranked Iowa Western Community College by seventeen strokes, the same margin ahead of fourth place finisher Hutchinson Community College as the No. 10 Blue Dragons finished at 922.  Garden City, who is receiving votes in the national poll and will host the 2017 championships, held off the Cougars for fifth finishing three strokes ahead at 76-over 940. 

Making a furious final day bid for the national championship tournament, Jakkapat Horsangchai's final round of 3-under par 69 fell four strokes shy of a bid placing in seventeenth.  Horsangchai got off to a sub-par start for the Thailand sophomore posting rounds of 80 and 83 on the blustery Monday two rounds but the University of Pacific signee's final day rally jumping nine spots in the standings came up short.

Two freshmen came in next on the Barton leaderboard as Frenchman Kylian Cavdar matched the field's largest jump in the standings vaulting eleven places to 22nd.  Carding first day rounds of 82 and 84, Cavdar wrapped up his first collegiate season firing a closing 2-under par 70 to finish at 20-ovr 236.  Opposite of Cavdar's performance, Thitipong Homruen was in the top ten after consecutive 6-over 78 rounds but a final round 85 sank the Thailand native to 30th at 25-over 241.

One stroke behind his teammate, Seokhun Kang was consistent through his three rounds with Monday's 80-83 rounds before winding out his Barton career with a 7-over 79 for his 31st finish at 26-over 242.

Winfield sophomore Dakota Soukup had a disastrous start to the 54-hole tournament with a 93 before settling the ship in the afternoon round with a solid 82.  Matching Kang's final round 79, Soukup finished his career at 38-over 254 to place 40th.   Jacob Uhrmacher was the most consistent Cougar on the two days as the Augusta freshman opened with an 89 before carding twin 88 scores to place 44th at 49-over 265.
