Smith leads three Cougars with basketball post-season honors

Three Barton Community College men’s basketball sophomores recently received post-season honors on the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Division I team with two landing on the All-Region VI Division I team. Sophomore Anthony Smith headlined the trio earning first team honors on both the conference and region list, being joined on the conference first team by Ezekiel Charles who also landed on the regional second team. Malik Rhodes rounded out the Cougar selections earning second team all-conference honors in his lone season with Barton.

Cougars' second half rally falls short in season ending loss in Region VI semifinals

The Barton Community College men's basketball team found itself behind from the opening tip in digging a large hole before a second half rally fell short 91-87 to Coffeyville Community College in the semifinal round of the Region VI Tournament held at Park City's Hartman Arena. The second seeded Cougars trailed by seventeen at halftime and as much as twenty early in second half play, mounting a fifty-seven point final twenty minutes in coming up short to end the season at 25-8. Improving to 21-12 on the year, sixth seeded Coffeyville advances to the championship game against top seeded Hutchinson as the Blue Dragons outlasted fifth seeded Butler 105-103 in the late semifinal game.

Barton men to Region VI Final Four with win over Cowley

The Barton Community College men's basketball team defeated Cowley College 76-69 Sunday night at Park City's Hartman Arena in the quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament. Barton ends seventh seeded Cowley's season at 17-15 while the second seeded Cougars improve to 25-7 on the season advancing to the semifinal round for the first time since 2013. The Cougars will next play in the 5:00 p.m. game on Tuesday in the rubber match with sixth seeded Coffeyville Community College who improved to 20-12 on the season after the Ravens dispatched Neosho County Community College 84-60.

Cougars pull away late to slam door on Seward County's season advancing to Region VI Quarterfinals

The second seeded Barton Community College men’s basketball team had its hands full Thursday night at the Barton Gym in first round playoff action until a 10-0 run with 3:30 remaining slammed the door shut on Seward County Community College with a 76-62 victory. Ending the Saints season at 9-23, Barton improves to 24-7 and more importantly advances to Sunday’s quarterfinals of the Region VI Tournament at Park City’s Hartman Arena. Waiting for the Cougars in the 7:00 p.m. game is seventh seeded 17-14 Cowley College who advanced with an impressive 92-50 victory over Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Barton men secure second seed outright, conclude regular season with victory over Neosho County

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team built a double-digit lead in the first fifteen minutes of Monday’s regular season finale at the Barton Gym, going on for a ten point 82-72 victory over Neosho County Community College. Starting off fast out of the second half gates, the Cougars controlled the first half of the final period as well, ballooning the lead out to as much as twenty-points before thwarting a late Neosho County rally. The victory clinched Barton’s outright second place standing in the Jayhawk Conference at 19-7, improving to 23-7 on the season while dropping Neosho County to 8-18 in conference and 11-19 overall.

Cougars come up short in 61-60 loss at Coffeyville

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team came up short Saturday night at Nellis Hall, falling 61-60 at Coffeyville Community College. The loss drops the second place Cougars to 18-7 in Jayhawk play and 27-7 overall while Coffeyville keeps its hopes for the region’s fourth seed alive improving to 14-11 and 18-11 on the year. Owning a one game lead for the second spot in the upcoming playoffs, the Cougars will seek to wrap up the seed in the regular season finale on Monday with a 7:30 p.m. tip hosting Neosho County Community College.

Barton men break away in second half for ten point win over Pratt, Smith with a career thirty-two point night

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team broke away early in second half play Wednesday night at the Barton Gym earning a 91-81 victory over Pratt Community College to sweep the season series over the Beavers. Leading by one at the break, the Cougars gained separation in the first five minutes of the second half while keeping Pratt out of striking range the rest of the way to win their third straight over the Beavers. The victory also clinched at least a tie for a second place finish in the rugged Jayhawk Conference improving to 18-6 and 22-6 on the year while dropping Pratt to 7-17 and 9-18 overall. Barton will next travel to Coffeyville Community College on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off before wrapping up the regular season on Monday in the hosting of Neosho County Community College.

Barton men hold off Cloud County to sweep season series

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team held off a second half Thunderbird rally on Hall of Fame nigh Saturday at the Barton Gym with a 74-71 victory over Cloud County Community College to sweep the season series. Leading by six at halftime, Barton doubled its lead in the next twelve minutes before an 18-8 Cloud County run made things interesting for the final 1:35. The Cougars then sank 7-of-8 from the free throw line holding off the Thunderbirds including a trey with one second remaining and a Barton turnover with the tying trey attempt unable to beat the buzzer. With three games remaining in the regular season, Barton strengthened is spot for the region’s second seed improving to 17-6 in Jayhawk play and 21-6 overall while Cloud County slips back to a fourth place tie with Coffeyville at 13-10 and 17-10 on the year. Within the remaining games, the Cougars have two at the Barton Gym beginning with Wednesday’s hosting of Pratt Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Barton rally falls short, Cougars fall by six at No. 2 Blue Dragons

Trailing by twenty-five points into the second half media timeout, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team launched a furious rally Wednesday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena to cut the deficit to two before falling 95-89 to the nation’s No. 2 ranked Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College. Receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll, Barton had their chances to tie or go ahead in the final two minutes but failed to convert as Hutchinson sank a perfect eight free throws in the final minute to win their fourth straight over the Cougars. The loss drops the Cougars to 16-6 in the Jayhawk and 20-6 overall while the victory clinches the conference championship for Hutchinson improving to 21-1 and 25-1 on the year. Barton’s next action comes Saturday as the Cougars host Cloud County Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Hall of Fame and Black Out Night at the Barton Gym.

Barton men take driver's seat of second place with twenty point win over Dodge City

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team shot over 50% Saturday night at the Barton Gym scoring fifty-one second half points in sending Dodge City Community College to an 87-67 defeat. Tied at 11, the Cougars broke open first half play with a 9-0 run to never look back, getting another nine point stretch mid-way through the second half building its largest lead of twenty-eight points before cruising the final ten minutes for the win holding the Conquistadors to their lowest shooting percentage of the year. The victory opens up a two game Barton lead for second place in the Jayhawk at 16-5, improving to 20-5 on the season, while sending Dodge City to 14-7 in conference play and 17-8 overall. Next up for the Cougars is a trip to first place Hutchinson Community College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the No. 4 ranked Blue Dragons in the Sports Arena.

Late surge lifts Cougars to 76-73 victory at Independence

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team needed a late comeback Wednesday at Independence Community College to split the season series with a 76-73 victory. The Cougars trailed by seven in the final four minutes before getting four consecutive defensive stops outscoring Independence 15-5 down the stretch in avenging the December home loss to the Pirates. The victory keeps Barton alone in second place of the Jayhawk standings at 15-5 improving to 19-5 on the season while dropping Independence to 8-12 and 11-12 overall. Barton will hope to avenge another earlier season loss this Saturday as the Cougars welcome in third place Dodge City Community College to the Barton Gym for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Cougars need late surge to fight off Allen County

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team needed a late surge Saturday evening at the Barton Gym to hold off a pesky Red Devil team from Allen County Community College 85-77. Tied with three minutes remaining, the Cougars owned the following two minutes scoring nine unanswered points to remain unbeaten at home against the Red Devils in fifteen meetings. The victory also keeps the Cougars alone in second place of the Jayhawk standings improving to 14-5 and 18-5 on the year while Allen County drops into ninth at 8-11 and 11-12 overall. Next up for the Cougars is a Wednesday trip to Independence Community College for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.

Barton men rally from late deficit for overtime win at Cowley

Unlike the previous shootout meeting at the Barton Gym, Wednesday night in Arkansas City was anything of an offensive highlight show but featured its share of dramatics as the Barton Community College men’s basketball team rallied from a nine-point late deficit to win 86-81 in overtime over the Tigers of Cowley College. Searching for offensive production and in a nine point hole with just under seven minutes to play, the Cougars contributed throughout the lineup needing a pair of free throws with four seconds left to force extra time. Barton then scored the opening four points of overtime and eight of the first ten to seize command before holding on for its second overtime win of the year. The Cougars’ victory, aided by Dodge City’s loss, leaves Barton alone in second place of the Jayhawk at 13-5 and 17-5 on the season while dropping the Tigers to 9-9 in conference action and 12-10 overall. Next up for Barton is Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. contest hosting Allen County Community College, a Red Devil team riding hot into the Barton Gym after Wednesday night’s 85-76 victory Butler Community College.

Cougars win 108-95 shoutout at the Barton Gym for season sweep of Saints

A 9-0 run to begin the second half and a season high fifteen three-pointers powered the Barton Community College men’s basketball team to a 108-95 shootout victory over Seward County Community College Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars broke open a three-point halftime lead burying a trio of long range shots going on to build a twenty-one point lead by the twelve minute mark in cruising to the series sweep of the Saints. Barton remains tied with Dodge City in the second spot of the Jayhawk at 12-5 and 16-5 on the season while Seward County drops to 3-14 and 6-15 on the year. The Cougars will next have a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday contest at Cowley College before hosting Allen County Community College next Saturday.

Barton men's bid for season sweep of Butler comes up short

Two months removed from a nineteen point win in El Dorado, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team’s bid to sweep the season series against Butler Community College came up shy in an 87-84 home defeat Wednesday night. Barton falls to 11-5 but remains in a second place tie in the Jayhawk standings at 15-5 on the year while Butler remains in the fourth position at 10-6 and 13-6 on the year. The Cougars will next host Seward County Community College on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Barton men hold off Colby for 65-60 victory

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team held off a pesky Colby Community College Wednesday night at the Barton Gym escaping with a 65-60 victory. The Cougars increased their ten point halftime edge to eighteen points midway through the final half only to see the Trojans fight back behind an 11-3 run drawing to within four with two minutes to play. Colby would cut the deficit to three with under a minute of action remaining but 7-of-8 free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the Barton win. The Cougars will next head to Garden City on Sunday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against the Broncbusters.
