Cougars receive post-season awards, Walker named MVP

Three Barton Community College men’s basketball players recently received post-season honors on the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) West Division with one landing on the All-Region VI Division I team. Sophomore Ahmad Walker headlined the three being named as the Most Valuable Player in both the Jayhawk West and Region VI, as well as, an obvious first team selection on both teams. Sophomores Jalin Barnes and Kenny Enoch also garnered honors being selected honorable mention Jayhawk West. The triplets anchored the Cougars to a 24-7 record and a second place in the rugged Jayhawk West with a 12-4 record. Finishing just outside the final NJCAA Division I poll, Barton spent time in the Top-25 splitting the season series with No. 7 Butler Community College while sweeping No. 23 Hutchinson Community College.

Barton’s Walker becomes four-time KJCCC Player of the Week

For the fourth time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Recording his tenth and eleventh double-double performance on the season last week, Walker averaged over twenty points and fourteen rebounds for Cougars. Walker shares his fourth time honor with Butler Community College’s Chris Howell, who also recorded a twenty-one point fourteen rebound performance in the Grizzlies lone game last week.

Cougars’ season comes to crashing end, Cloud County pulls off the upset 84-81

It was the matchup the Barton Community College men’s basketball team didn’t want to see in the opening round of the Region VI playoffs but it was the hand dealt by the scheduling gods. Having defeated Cloud County Community College by nine on Wednesday, the Cougars were faced again with having to defeat the Thunderbirds as the season stood in the balance. Barton took a nine point lead into the locker room but a Cloud County 11-2 run in the first three moments changed momentum eventually leading to the Cougars season coming to a halt 84-81. Finishing the regular season receiving votes in the national poll, Barton concludes the 2014-15 campaign at 24-7 after a 12-4 second place finish in the Jayhawk West standings. Cloud County, who finished last in the West at 3-13, improves to 17-14 earning a Region VI quarterfinal match against eleventh seeded Dodge City Community College at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.

Enoch’s record performance powers Cougars to 78-69 win over Cloud County

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team closed out the regular season Wednesday night at the Barton Gym with a 78-69 victory over Cloud County Community College. Avenging a last second loss in Concordia back in January, Barton erased a three-point second half deficit with a 12-2 run midway through the half and never allowed the Thunderbirds closer than five points the rest of the way. Finishing second in the Jayhawk West at 14-4, the nationally receiving votes Cougar team improved to 24-6 overall while dropping Cloud County to 3-13 in West play and 16-14 overall. In a stroke of oddity regarding the seeding for the upcoming Region VI tournament, the two teams will battle again in a rubber match this Saturday as the Cougars will again play host to the Thunderbirds in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. with free admission to the public.

Title hopes dashed as No. 21 Cougars get shot down at Pratt

Title hopes dashed as No. 21 Cougars lose at hot shooting Pratt Needing a win to keep its slim hope of sharing a Jayhawk West title, the No. 21 Barton Community College men's basketball team couldn't take care of their part Saturday night at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena getting blown out at Pratt Community College. Barton led by two at halftime but a 13-4 run including eleven straight by the Beavers to open the second frame was a preview of things to come as Pratt would score fifty-two second half points. Barton cut it to two with 13:30 to play but the hot shooting Beavers went on a 13-2 run to stretch the lead to double digits and never looked back connecting on 9-of-11 beyond the arc in the game’s final twenty-minutes. Having already locked up the West's second seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament, Barton sees its win streak stopped at five dropping to 11-4 in conference play and 23-6 overall while Pratt improves to 8-7 and 17-12 on the season. Barton will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday as the Cougars host Cloud County Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

No. 21 Cougars escape with 75-73 win over Colby

Moving into the national polls earlier in the day at No. 21, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team survived Colby Community College upset bid Wednesday night at the Barton Gym 75-73. With twenty lead changes throughout the night, the Cougars grabbed the final lead with five minutes remaining to hold on for the victory. Still in the hunt for a Jayhawk West title just a half game behind No. 8 Butler Community College, Barton locked up at least the second spot in the West at 11-3 and 23-5 overall while dropping Colby 3-12 and 12-17 overall. The Cougars begin the first of only two remaining regular season games this Saturday at Pratt Community College before concluding next Wednesday hosting Cloud County Community College. Saturday’s tip-off time at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena is slated for 8:00 p.m.

Barton’s Walker named KJCCC Player of the Week for second straight week

For the second straight week and third time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week for his performances last week. After shooting over 56% from the field the previous week, Walker had an even better week shooting 61.5% from the field including 66.7% from beyond the arc and 80% from the charity stripe. Setting a new career high with thirty-two points in Barton’s two-point win versus Dodge City, Walker’s twenty-four point week average increased his Jayhawk West leading average to 20.5 points per contest. Scoring sixteen points and eleven rebounds last Saturday in Barton’s five-point win at Garden City, Walker recorded his fourth double-double in the last eight games finishing the week averaging 9.5 rebounds and three assists per game.

Barton men sweep nationally ranked Hutchinson with 86-73 win at the Sports Arena

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team led virtually wire-to-wire Wednesday night at the Sports Arena knocking off No. 21 Hutchinson Community College 86-73. Trailing 1-0 two minutes into the contest, the Cougars turned the tides building a twenty-point first half lead going on to sweep the season series and win for the second straight year in the Sports Arena. Barton remains in the hunt for a Jayhawk West title just a half game behind Butler Community College while solidifying its hold on second place at 10-3 and 22-5 overall and dropping the Blue Dragons into a third place tie at 7-5 and 20-6 overall. Winning four straight within its tough four-game seven-day stretch, the Cougars will get a much needed week’s rest before hosting Colby Community College at 7:30 p.m. on Homecoming festivity night taking place on Wednesday, February 18.

Barton men knock off No. 6 Butler 86-78

The Barton Community College men's basketball team knocked off No. 6 Butler Community College 86-78 Monday night at the Barton Gym. Having lost to the Grizzlies by two in El Dorado earlier this season, the Cougars built a sixteen point second half lead then held off a late rally for the win. The victory moves the Cougars one game behind the Grizzlies improving to 9-3 in the Jayhawk West and 21-5 on the season while dropping Butler to 9-2 and 23-2 overall. Barton will wrap up its current three-game five-day stretch with another big conference matchup on Wednesday as the Cougars travel to No. 17 ranked Hutchinson Community College. Looking for revenge on the Cougars from the 105-90 defeat at the Barton Gym, Hutchinson (7-4, 20-5) trails Barton in the conference standings and is coming off a 76-71 overtime loss at Butler Saturday night. Tip-off time in the Hutchinson Sports Arena set for 7:30 p.m.

Barton men hold off Garden City, Monday showdown versus Butler looms

The Barton Community College men's basketball team picked up a big Jayhawk Conference road win Saturday night defeating Garden City Community College 73-68 at the Perryman Athletic Conference. The win moved the Cougars into sole possession of second place in the West standings at 8-3 and 20-5 overall while dropping the Broncbusters to 3-8 and 14-11. Getting the first of three games in five days under their belt, Barton prepares for a big showdown at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Barton Gym with No. 6 ranked and conference leader Butler Community College (9-1, 23-1). The Cougars’ eighteen point second half deficit rally fell short earlier in the conference season as the Grizzlies held on to win 73-71 in El Dorado. Barton will then conclude the tough stretch in the schedule with a Wednesday road trip to third place and No. 17 ranked Hutchinson Community College.

Barton’s Walker earns second KJCCC Player of the Week honor

For the second time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week for his performances last week. Despite two road conference losses by the then-No. 25 ranked Cougars, Walker tied his career high thirty points in a last second loss at Cloud County then three days later recorded his seventh double-double of the season in Saturday’s loss at Seward County. Held scoreless during Saturday’s first half action, the Jayhawk West’s leading scorer put up twenty-four points and grabbed twelve rebounds while also dishing out seven assists. For the week Walker shot over 56% from the field averaging twenty-seven points and nine rebounds to go along with over six assists per game.

Cougars’ late rally avoids upset, Barton escapes with 80-78 win over Dodge City

The Barton Community College men's basketball team rallied from a late eight point deficit Wednesday night at the Barton Gym to escape 80-78 over Dodge City Community College. Having defeated the Conquistadors by thirty-one points in Dodge City in the second game of the conference season, Barton knocked down the big shots while getting some help escaping Dodge City’s upset bid. The victory kept Barton in second place in the Jayhawk West as the Cougars snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 and 19-5 on the season while Dodge City suffers its fourth straight defeat in dropping to 4-6 in conference and 14-10 overall. Barton will begin a tough three-game five-day stretch beginning on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. at Garden City Community College. The Cougars will then return home Monday for a battle with No. 6 Butler Community College before wrapping up the stretch with a Wednesday trip to No. 17 Hutchinson Community College.

No. 25 Cougars shut down in 89-76 loss at Seward County

The high scoring Barton Community College men’s basketball team were beat at their own game for the second straight game, taking an 89-76 whooping to Seward County Community College Saturday night at the Greenhouse in Liberal. Averaging a Region VI best 93.4 points per game and second in field goal percentage at over 50%, the No. 25 ranked Cougars went cold shooting a season low 40% from the field while allowing its opponent to shoot over 50% for the second straight game. The second straight loss and game away from the Barton Gym drops the Cougars into a second place tie in the Jayhawk West standings at 6-3 and 18-5 overall while Seward County improves to 4-5 and 11-11. Next up for the Cougars will be Dodge City Community College on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

Last second shot knocks off No. 25 Cougars, Barton men fall 95-94 at Cloud County

Less than one second stood between the Barton Community College men’s basketball team winning its fifth straight game but the No. 25 ranked Cougars couldn’t hold on to a four point late lead in falling 95-94 to Cloud County Community College Wednesday night in Concordia. Making their 2015 debut in the national polls one day prior, the Cougars drop to 6-2 in Jayhawk play and 18-4 overall while Cloud County, who has been ranked as high as No. 13 in the national poll before losing six of its next seven, improves to 2-6 in conference and 15-7 overall. Barton will look to regroup as a road trip looms on Saturday as the Cougars travel to Liberal to take on Seward County Community College in an 8:00 p.m. conference battle at the Greenhouse.

Barton women dominate for 73-56 win at Cloud County

Snapping a seven-game losing streak in Concordia, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team dominated Cloud County Community College most of Wednesday’s contest in winning 73-56. The third straight victory gets the Lady Cougars to .500 on the conference season at 4-4 while improving to 14-6 overall and dropping Cloud County to 1-7 in the Jayhawk and 8-13 overall. Barton will conclude its two-game road stretch with on Saturday as the Lady Cougars travel to No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College for a 6:00 p.m. tip at the Greenhouse.

Cougars shake off pesky Beavers for 100-90 win

Another hot shooting night and balanced scoring led Barton Community College men’s basketball team to its fourth straight victory holding off a pesky Pratt Community College team 100-90 on Hall of Fame night Saturday at the Barton Gym. Shooting over 50% in the first half but finding itself trailing by three at the break, the Cougars took it up a notch shooting nearly 58% in scoring fifty-five second half points. Six Cougars scored eleven or more points as the Jayhawk West’s leading scoring team scored 100 or more for the seventh time on the season and third time in seven conference games. Barton improves to 6-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 18-3 overall while dropping Pratt to 3-4 and 12-9. Next up for the Cougars will be a trip to Concordia on Wednesday to take on Cloud County Community College in an 8:00 p.m. tip at Bryant Gymnasium.
