Cougars receive post-season awards, land two on first team

Three Barton Community College men's basketball players were named to the recently released All-Jayhawk Conference West Division and All-Region VI Division I teams.  Algie Key repeats as a first team selection being joined by fellow sophomore Andell Cumberbatch.  Sophomore Turon Parker also garnered honors being selected for honorable mention in conference and second team all-region.  The triplets anchored the No. 24 ranked Cougars to a 28-6 record and march through the Region VI Tournament eventually falling in the championship game to end the season.

Algie Key, who won the Jayhawk West Division freshman of the year and earned third team All-American status in 2012, averaged 17.6 points per game his sophomore season while also grabbing 6.2 rebounds and dishing out 4.4 assists per game. A Decatur, Georgia, native, Key assaulted the Barton record books in his two seasons, leaving the Cougar program atop the chart for career free throws attempted (536) and made (371), the top two spots in single season free throws attempted (280 in 2012, 256 in 2013), and owns the third and fourth spots in single season free throw made (189 in 2012, 182 in 2013). A unique balance of scoring and distributing to teammates, Key also finished his career fourth on the all-time list in scoring (1214 points) and assists (315). Playing in sixty-seven games as a Cougar, Key recorded one triple-double, thirteen double-doubles, and had twenty-seven games of scoring twenty or more points including six games reaching the thirty-point mark.

Andell Cumberbatch averaged 14.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game his sophomore season in addition to being the Cougars' most improved player from his freshman year becoming a dual threat from the outside or inside. Posting double-double performances in nine of Barton's sixteen conference games, Cumberbatch just missed three more games by a mere point or rebound. The sophomore from East Orange, New Jersey, Cumberbatch improved his shooting by eight percent and over twelve percent from beyond the arc. Additionally Cumberbatch raised his free throw percentage over twenty percent in becoming one of the Cougars best all-around shooters. One of the biggest areas Cumberbatch made an impact for the Cougars is rebounding where he raised his average over five boards per contest. 

Becoming one of the leaders for the Cougars, Turon Parker delivered for Coach Fletchall posting solid numbers throughout the year. Switching between point guard and shooting guard responsibilities, Parker averaged 11.8 points reaching double-figures in twenty-two games this season while dishing out 3.5 assists per game. The Canton, Ohio, native also averaged 2.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per contest while leading the Cougars with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.
