The No. 13 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball survived two point-bank shots in the waning seconds to hold off Dodge City Community College 83-81 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. Fortunately for the Cougars the Conquistadors were milliseconds from sending the game into overtime as Clarence Willard’s put-back basket was just after time expired. With the win Barton keeps pace for the West title by improving to 7-3 and 22-3 overall and trailing Seward County by one game. Meanwhile Dodge drops its sixth straight to fall to 3-7 in the conference and 15-9 overall. Barton travels to Garden City Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. West game. Garden City, 5-5 in conference and 17-7 overall, dropped a 71-64 decision at Hutchinson on Wednesday night.

Highlights
For the last 16:27 Dodge City outplayed the Cougars and fortunately for Barton the Conquistadors were a fraction of a second from sending the game into overtime. After Barton's Algie Key connected on one-of-two free throws, Dodge's Clarence Willard drove around the Barton defense to miss a potential game-tying layup. Barton's Dwayne Brunson couldn't control the rebound, and Dodge would have one last chance on the inbound. Willard inbounded to Tyshon Pickett who then missed a point-blank layup and a Willard put-back bucket was still in his hands as the buzzer sounded and Barton survived for the two-point victory.
Upon further review of the game tape, Willard's shot was a mere .13 seconds late as the ball was clearly in his hands as time expired.
Scoring
Algie Key led three players in double digit scoring by connecting on 13-of-16 free throws for twenty one points. Dwayne Brunson recorded his eighth double-double of the season with sixteen points and fifteen rebounds, while Julian Rose finished with thirteen.
Tyshon Pickett led four dodge players in scoring including two with twenty plus points. Pickett scored twenty two and grabbed ten rebounds, while RJ McGhee was close behind with twenty one points and eight rebounds. Clarence Willard scored thirteen with eight assists and Tony Phillips contributed twelve points and seven rebounds.
