Cougars season comes to end in Region VI Title contest

It has been a season to remember for the Barton County Community College men’s basketball. But that season, which brought the Cougars back to national prominence, ended short Tuesday night a game short of the NJCAA National Tournament. Barton made it to the Region VI title tilt, but came up short, falling to Coffeyville, 69-61 at Koch Arena in Wichita. The loss ended Barton’s season at 27-7. It was the 1st year the Cougars were eligible for the post season since the 2004 season, when Barton also lost to Coffeyville in the Region VI finals. It was the 2nd straight Region VI title for the Red Ravens and the 5th in the past 7 years.

Johnson delivers Barton ticket back to Region VI Championship game

No one that has followed the Barton County Community College men’s basketball team this year should have been surprised. But somehow, yet again, there was Omar Johnson coming with an improbable game-winning shot. This time the shot punched Barton’s ticket back to the Region VI Championship game – a place the Cougars have been very familiar with over the past 9 years. Barton held back a furious late rally by Dodge City in the Region VI semifinals at Wichita’s Koch Arena, beating Dodge 57-54 on Johnson’s 3-pointer to move into the finals against another familiar foe – Coffeyville. The Cougars and Red Ravens will hook it up in the title game for the 2nd time in 4 years and battle for the 4th in the past 9 season in Region VI play. Barton has not been eligible the past 2 season, so this is the 4th time in 7 post-season possibilities the 2 teams have matched up. In fact, it the 2nd straight time Barton has made the finals when it is eligible.

Barton wraps up home playoff spot with win over Colby

Barton ends its regular season with a 24-6 record and a 10-6 mark in the West. The Cougars could still finish as high as 3rd with a loss by Cloud Saturday. A Cloud wins give the Cougars 4th place. Cougars lose at Hutch; finish at home Wednesday against Colby

The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team did not have a fun night at Hutchinson Saturday, losing its Jayhawk West tilt to the Blue Dragons by its largest margin of defeat this season. Hutchinson won the contest 84-71, handing Barton its 1st double digit loss of the season in the process. The Cougars fell to 9-6 in the West and 23-6 overall this season. Hutchinson is now 7-7 in the West and 20-8 overall. Barton will conclude the regular season portion of the schedule Wednesday when Colby pays a visit to the Barton Gym. The Cougars need a win over the Trojans (5-23, 1-13) in order to get a home playoff spot. The win would not assure Barton a home spot without some other things taking place over the next two playing dates in the conference but it would put the Cougars in a very good position to host in the opening round of the Region VI tournament.

Barton picks up road win at Butler; Pyle goes for 17

The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team never trailed in its game Wednesday night at Butler County, but Barton was able to shake free from the Grizzlies until a run to start the 2nd half gave Barton a little cushion. Barton (23-5) is now 9-5 in the West with 2 more games to play. They are 1 of 4 teams with 5 losses in the West – only 3 of which will get home playoff games.
