Tech Prepped for Red Raider Invitational

January 23, 2020 | Track and Field

Texas Tech primed for second meet of indoor campaign.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will host its second meet of the season, the Red Raider Invitational, Friday.

The Sports Performance Center will play host to a batch of solid programs at its first one-day meet of the season. Set to make their way to Lubbock are the nationally-ranked women's programs from Arkansas and Houston as well as the top-20 men's teams from Arkansas and TCU.

"Arizona, Air Force, Arkansas, Houston – wow," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Wes Kittley. "There's just really good competition every week and in every event."

Tech's season opener, the Corky Classic, produced several exciting performances on both the men's and women's side. In addition, the women's 60m hurdles school record was toppled, becoming the first program mark of the season to go down. Gabrielle McDonald was responsible for the broken record after running an 8.02 in the finals. She currently sits as the top hurdler in the Big 12.

Also standing atop the conference in their respective events are D'Jenne Egharevba (200m) and the 4x400 relay on the women's side. Egharevba ran a 23.61 in her first 200m of the season. The 4x4 group of McDonald, Amanda Crawford, Damajahnee Birch and Jadisa Warden turned in a 3:39.05 to mark themselves as the top relay team in the conference early in the season.

One of the most exciting top men's rankings comes from Ashton O'Conner, who in his collegiate debut ran 20.76 in the 200m to snag the top ranking in the conference. Also atop the Big 12 is Jequan Hogan (triple jump) and Gabe Oladipo (weight throw). The latter, with a distance of 67'-3.5" (20.51m), came within just three inches of the school record with his top toss.

The Red Raider Invitational will get underway with field events at 10 a.m. on Friday. Running events will begin at 11 a.m. The meet will be streamed on TexasTechTV. Tickets are available here.
